No big win with a set!!

Postby Zuccala » Thu Sep 01, 2005 10:53 pm

Hello Every one, today i hit 2 sets in unraised pots. Now the flop for each of them was 2 suited. I was in LP both times and bet the pot and everybody folded. Now I can understand checking with a double suited flop with 1 or 2 limpers but with 4-5 in my case, I was damned if I was gonna let a free card fall that could beat me. Am I right to be thinking this?? Or is this weak??

I dont give the free card. Not even to 1 player. Not on that boards. What are you going to do if the board completewes the flush and you get heavy action? Are you going to let go your set? Since I am almost uncapable of that (and for some reason even less when I slowplay them) I simply dont slowplay ANYTHING but BIG FULL HOUSES.

If you are at the smaller tables the problem ISNT having to few callers anyway. Bet, they wont call sometimes and they´ll beat you also. At least you won somemoney right there.

You can also think of it as ignoring implied odds here as you probably had the best hand from start to the quick finish. 44 was actually the best holding so don't worry about setting and not dragging a monster.

Not only do you not want to give a free card here to someone on the flush draw you want to replicate moves you will make from that position often. In this case you have a set which is a great hand but in many others you will be betting with snow and picking up the pot in LP as well.

This is why I practice what I preach and lead out with a set on a junk board. I do it because that's the same play I make with nothing in the blinds when I think the board missed everyone. In poker, NL in particular, you have to telegraph your moves in a way that you apply constant pressure to weakness (them checking to you) and you play monster hands in a way thats conistant with your normal steals, continuation bets, TPTK feeler bets etc. The point is to keep people guessing about your hand and second guessing themselves so they don't know when to make a move. This is a key element in my game and it works very well.

Well, of course having a set is perfect, what I meant is people are overestimating their small pairs, cause of their set potential and are bleeding off money trying to catch one and often losing their entire stack when they finally hit it.
