I'm pretty sure babs was responsible for making wearing a seatbelt in cars compulsory and some other traffic-related laws (drink driving?) that were controversial at the time but probably saved a lot of lives since.... I just assumed that would be as home sec but maybe she was minister for transport or something.
Being ultra-pedantic here but I wouldn't say education is one of the least senior cabinet posts.... some of the crap ones they've made more recently (international development, parliamentary secretaries, N Ireland, environment, culture media & sport, constitutional affairs etc) are much less important IMO. I'd probably have education behind only deputy PM, chancellor, home, foreign and maybe at a push health and defence in terms of seniority and importance.
