I haven't read this whole thread, but what about Edwards for the Dems? Not sure if anyone mentioned him... He seemed quite a strong speaker and appealling politician running for deputy last time round, he looked a lot more like a possible pres to me than the personality vacuum that is John Kerry.... Seems a slightly more centralist candidate than many of the other ones, I don't think Hillary would have a cat in hell's chance against anyone.
I don't know if Obama would be a bad choice on the ticket, though... Obviously it'll lose the Dems votes in the south but might mobilise the black populace which seems to be key to a Dem win as far as I'm aware. A lot of the states in which having a black man on the ticket would be a major source of trouble are ones that the Republicans dominate anyway, as far as I'm aware... In swingier states like Fla, Ohio etc I guess the small number of votes they'd lose from white folks not keen on a black deputy may be balanced out by the fact that ethnic minorities may vote in larger numbers...
