In this case maybe a check would have been better, since you were in the BB. They might not put you on a set, but they could be afraid of 2 small pairs or something like that.

After reading this I checked my PokerTracker stats for 16K hands, and looking at PP under TT, I was surprised to see that they are only about 1-2 BB/hand on the positive side. My 33, 55 stats are sligtly negative, the other slightly positive.
This suggests maybe I should tighten up calling raises with them and only call in late position... What do you think?
On the NL50 tables I call $2 raises with small PP, not call larger ones. So the stacks are 25x the raise, but it's not too often I get the other stack when I hit my set. Most of the time it's like ice's example, I bet or raise the flop hoping they have a large PP and I get a small pot... Interesting findings at least.

The other thing that nobody has commented on yet is raising pairs, especially when nobody is in the pot yet. The good thing about raising them is that even when you get called, you can more often than not take the pot down with a bet on the flop (where you could easily be ahead if opponent has highcards) or make a well-disguised set. I just find that being the preflop aggressor gives you so many more options on the flop and turn, whether you are in position or not.
