Heehee. WEll, like i said the guy was a friend of a friend, so i couldnt exactly kick him in the teeth and say 'payup you worthless bitch-whore!!' like i wouldve if it was anyone unfortunate enough to be a friend of mine in the first degree.
Incidentally, kuso, that was the reason that we ended up taking our money back, because we ultimately didnt stipulate the criteria by which the contest was to be judged. Understood as a legal contract, unless the ambiguity was intentional on the part of one party as a way to secure some sort of unfair advantage, a latent contractual ambiguity is grounds for either party to dissolve the contract. If it was intentional on the part of one party, then the ambiguity is interpreted against that party, and in accordance with the reasonable expectations of the other party. In this case, i dont think there was any intentional ambiguity, so him exercising his option to dissolve the contract was legit. Of course, (and this may have been your point) - i probably shouild have told him different and said payup or else im calling the cops, and your going to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison on charges of fraud, larceny, conversion, jack-rolling, blaspheme, sodomy, and general disregard of the public good you fuck! ! I guess i coulda gone that road, but clearly i wasnt thinking!
