Homegame argument

Postby MecosKing » Sat Nov 26, 2005 2:03 am

whatup all.

Well, we had a little homegame tonight, nothing too major. Just a few guys and a few beers, and stuff like that. An argument came up between myself and a friend of a friend.

We were playing i think 5 handed NL 100 with 1/2 blinds. UTG raises to 6 and 2 guys cold call. Im looking down at 23o on the button, and i say, ah fuckit i call. The SB calls, and the guy in the BB looks down at his hand and is like -WOW my hand is bad- everyones in though? I call, what the hell.

I was like, to him- dude i guarantee my hand is worse than yours. And hes likt noway, mine is worse, ill make you a sidebet. I was like okay shure, ill bet you mine is worse. So we bet $25, and he turns over 27o and says sendit. Im like nway dood, 23o is a worse hand. HU against 27, 23o is a loser. He was like 23o is a LOWER hand, for lowball purposes, but 27o is the WORST hand in holdem, and thats that. Im like no waaaay dood. Anyways we ended up just taking our money back, which was no biggy, but i still say i won that bet.

Just wondering how you guys would have adjudicated this particular dispute...

72o is the worst hand in Hold-Em. Cannot make a straight without 4 on the board. Cannot make a flush without 4 on the board. The very lowest high card that meets those two criteria.

End of discussion.

23o is worst when heads-up, but 27o is the worst outside of heads-up.

I'm not sure what the exact numbers are, but i'm pretty sure 23 is also a worse hand in a 3 way pot. i think its only when its 4-5 handed and up that 27 is worse

Just ran a few hands though an odds calculator. 23 seems to worse that 27 in five handed situations unless there's a pocket pair in the field. I'm guessing thats when the straight possibilities of 23 become more important since hitting a single pair isnt going to cut it.

pretty sketchy analysis though.

i think you're both fools and should pay me the money as a way of thanking me for pointing this out to you.

that being said, you should be able to "lawyer" your way out of this one with your friend, as you didn't stipulate the criteria by which you would define bad or worse. dude, did you really go to law school?

23o is better if the pot is contested 5 way or more and 27o is better if the pot is contested 4 way or less. This is of course against COMPLETELY random hands.

It is better after the flop BUT preflop 72 is higher than 23! / high beats 3 High!

Make him pay, Mecos!

Heehee. WEll, like i said the guy was a friend of a friend, so i couldnt exactly kick him in the teeth and say 'payup you worthless bitch-whore!!' like i wouldve if it was anyone unfortunate enough to be a friend of mine in the first degree.

Incidentally, kuso, that was the reason that we ended up taking our money back, because we ultimately didnt stipulate the criteria by which the contest was to be judged. Understood as a legal contract, unless the ambiguity was intentional on the part of one party as a way to secure some sort of unfair advantage, a latent contractual ambiguity is grounds for either party to dissolve the contract. If it was intentional on the part of one party, then the ambiguity is interpreted against that party, and in accordance with the reasonable expectations of the other party. In this case, i dont think there was any intentional ambiguity, so him exercising his option to dissolve the contract was legit. Of course, (and this may have been your point) - i probably shouild have told him different and said payup or else im calling the cops, and your going to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison on charges of fraud, larceny, conversion, jack-rolling, blaspheme, sodomy, and general disregard of the public good you fuck! ! I guess i coulda gone that road, but clearly i wasnt thinking!

HAHA! I did so goto lawschool! Passing the bar....eh, well, ya know how that goes.... me love the gamble gamble too much for such things....
