Flopped a monster - nut straight

Postby AlamedaMike » Sat Oct 01, 2005 11:12 pm

I played this hand wrong and it cost me all my chips - live ring game NL$200, Blinds 3,2,2.

I was in the BB with [9c] [7d] and about 6 of us saw the flop w/pot about $20.

[Tc] [8h] [6c] and I checked.

MP bet $25, Btn called $25.

I had been running bad all day and was down $300 over all and I got excited. I decided to check raise to $100 with the nut straight and see if I could take the pot.

The first player re-raised, the BTN called and I pushed the rest of my chips - I had $340 preflop. The Btn called.

MP - [Th] [Ts]

BTN - [Jc] [8c]

The turn was [5c] - Btn got his flush.

The River was [5h] - MP got his full house.

I did a $100 re-buy.

After the hand was over I was discussing my play with my neighbor (Bob). We concluded that I should have just check called the flop bet and if a blank hit the Turn then push all in. If the MP called me with his set of Tens I was 75% ahead.

Since we now know that the turn was not a blank I would have saved a bunch of chips. Hindsight is 20/20.

Any comments on which is the better play. I could have bet out on the flop and the MP player was sure to raise me. I could then re-raise all in and see if he called.

Poker stove has the odds for me 40% and each of them 30% on the flop. If a blank hit the Turn I would be a 61% favorite to win.

don't listen to bob. if you know MP and btn have what they have, then you can call and wait for a blank. but there is no way i am just calling this flop when button is probably on a flush draw and mp could have whatever. i am making the flush draw pay.

what you and bob discussed is very high up the poker echelon. You've got the nuts, but you wait it out to see if the turn is a good card, so your odds are much better. The problem with this, is your stacks aren't all that deep. Since you don't know exactly what your opponents have, and you don't wanna lay down the winner, pushing is correct.

If you have a great read on these players, you might be able to pull off the check/call, then all-in on the turn. otherwise, just push in with the nuts and you'll win more often then not.

Pushing is not a bad play here so I wouldn't feel bad about your play.

I generally feel bad about my play when I have a great hand (eg a set), and i know I'm probably going to have difficulty every folding it AND I don't put pressure on my opponents and they draw out on me. If you can't fold it, make sure you apply some heat somewhere. That's when you should feel bad IMO; not for your push.

I just used PokerStove to analyse this hand.
On the flop you did NOT flop a monster, here are the exact numbers:

You (Nut Straight): 40.2%
TT (top Set): 31.4%
J8s (2.pair and Flush draw): 28.4%

In my opinion, going all-in on the flop is the best play, but you lose more often than you win.
