I hate Poker - should I consider quiting?

Postby AlamedaMike » Sat Sep 17, 2005 6:45 pm

This is a few bad beats but I am really asking if I played the hands right or if I played them wrong I should consider quitting the game?

NL$200 live 10 players - blinds $3,2,2.

hand #1

I have [As] [2s] in the BB. Villain makes it $10 to go with 5 callers so I like my odds. I call.

Flop [3s] [4s] [Td] - I check, check, check, Villain bets $20, I call, muck, muck.

Now Heads up Pot about $100.

Turn [5h] - Now I have a straight and the nut flush draw and $120 left. I go all in hoping he did not raise with 56.

Villain calls shows [7s] [8s] - only out is a non spade 6 - 3 outs.

River [6h] -

Rebuy $200

Hand #2

[Js] [Jd] - bb. MP bets $20 to go and I call. 4 see the flop -Pot $80

Flop [8h] [Jh] [4h] - damn - set but 3-suit board.

I bet $80 - villain has $80 and calls - shows [Ah] [Ks]

River [Qh] - Damn

Below $100 rebuy to $200.

Hand #3

[2s] [2d] button. MP raises to $20 - 4 see the flop - pot $80.

Flop [Td] [Qs] [2d] - I flop bottom set.

It is check to villain who bets $40.

I think about raising but 2 behind me so I call. They muck - HU

Turn [8h] - Villain goes all-in for $200 and I have $200.

 Not good but I am not going to muck my set but probably should.

Villain [Ts] [Th] - ouch.

Rebuy $200.

Hand #4

[Js] [Jd] UTG and make it $20 to go. 3 callers - pot $80

Flop [2s] [4s] [2d]

I bet $80 - villain has $80 and calls. Shows [Qs] [Ts]

Turn [Ks] River [As] - damn. WTF.

Hand #5

[Qh] [Qd] - sb - Button has $50 and bets $25. I raise him $25 all muck to him and he calls.

Villain shows [Ks] [Kd] - no help

don't rebuy.

hand #6

I have about $55 left.

[7s] [7d] on the button - EP makes it $12 to go - Pot about $60 so I push all in.

The player that beat me with the Kings (RHP) says you called me so I will give your money back and calls.

Villain shows [As] [Qh]

Flop is a [Qs] and no 7 - I have had it for the day and quit.

At least 4 times I have had the best hand and got out drawn.

I flopped a set of Queens once and won. I flopped Ace high straight and won a small pot. I had pocket jacks 3 times and won once. I had Aces once and won.

My question is - are these bad beats or bad play? The variance in a $200 NL is win or lose $600 - today I lost $800.

I am thinking of quitting. Comments on my play - I played for 5 hours and there were more hands. I mostly missed every draw that I tried for except the Straight above. I either win a small pot and lose a big pot.

Fold to the 200 bet on 3...and you were way too agro on 4.

Just be thankful that though these days happen, they don't happen often. You should seriously consider revising your rebuy strategy: your table image gets SHOT when you keep suffering bad beats, and the people putting them on you become stronger, and more likely to put more on you...a vicious cycle.

Maybe not quit, but take some time away from the game to do something else until you don't feel so demoralized :) Sometimes after a horrendous run I will play a short session book a win and quit. Often I will drop in stakes until the screwy stuff seems to even out, and especially if it is me causing a bad run to get worse.

Keep in mind when you flip a coin and lose well it was a coinflip to begin with. Choose those carefully, you should have fold equity. I generally gain the most fold equity when making a move when I'm "running hot". They are more likely to believe that I have KK in that spot, granted there are people that love to AQ vs KK.

If the board is three suited and you hold top set, you might be a little ahead or a little behind. It is a marginal situation and AA or KK with the suited card is likely to call and probably in a good spot to crack a set with 11 outs. All things added up you are probably even money here and a little luck and fold equity is needed. I like pushing if you are unwilling to let go later either thru stubborness or stack sizes, than making reasonable bets, I like pushing even more against poor opponents that are unable to let go of AA or KK with out the heart.

Set over set happens, I've had streaks of it happening frequently or even worse every set that isn't set over set runs into some BS running gutshot that is raising me on the turn.

Thanks - I guess I will not quit yet and just not rebuy. I think that will work. On Hnad #4 - wanted to get HU with the guy that I - just turned out poorly. That is why I bet so much. Also, UTG raise with JJ is dicey at best.

Thanks Dale - I had JJ 3 times in 5 hours. I raised with it twice and won once. The other two were beat by flushes.

If overcards fall I can get rid of it.

We've ALL had days like that. It's why you have a bankroll.

Take time off until you feel confident again.

Thanks - I was thinking the same thing. I have not been doing well ever since I won the $35,100 jackpot. :?

I think I will take a week or two off from that game. I will still play online at the NL50 FTP level.

I just had [As] [Qc] and flopped [Kh] [Th] [Js] nut straight and was second to act HU. He checked and I bet the pot of $14. He called.

Turn [6h] - - it goes check, check,

River [2h] it goes check, check

He had [8h] [9h]

It did not upset me. Just happy he did bet and make me fold my straight.

I am trying to keep the attitude where I get my money in the middle with the best hand or the best draw with proper odds and let the cards fall where they may. If I can make the correct decision then I think that I have done all that I can do.

As you know that is not easy. That brings me to a question.

Hand #3 where I had the pocket deuces and called a 10% of his stack raise and I hit my hand. My thinking was if I hit my set I might be able to get his entire stack of $250. Well, as we know that did not work out as planned.

He struck me as a player that would go all in with AA or KK and that is why I called his all-in.

Do you think that this was an error? and I should have folded or was it a better play to raise him $40 on the flop and then folded to a re-raise? That way I am out $100 and not $250.

Thanks

Well, for what it is worth department - I have decided, after 6 months, to quit playing NO-LIMIT in live games until such time as I improve my game.

I feel like I am giving my money away - 7 losing sessions to 3 winning session out of the last 10.

I was winning before I hit my Jackpot on 8/21 and since then I can not get my rhythm back. I make one or two mistakes and that ruins my session. I was ahead yesterday about $300 and then for some reason I tried to run a bluff against a better hand (he flopped a set of Queens) - I still do not know why I just did not fold preflop to his raise as I would normally do.

I will continue online at the lower 25/50c NL50 level until things return to normal and I get my equilibrium back.

Live I will stick to the $6/12 and $12/24 LIMIT games that I can beat on weekends.

I have seen players blow $600 on stone cold bluffs that did not work out - But, I rarely try that. I did run one buff with [7d] [4d] and showed which helped my table image. lately, mostly I win small pots and lose big ones - yesterday AA and the guy flopped 2 pair. He was short stacked and I called his raise.

Well,

I have figured out what I hate and it is not poker. I enjoy playing $4/8 7-stud live everytime I play it - I win often but not always.

Hold'em is a great game but frustrating - I win sometimes but not often.

What I hate is losing at NL more often than I win.

I hate making dumb decisions. I tried to quit making dumb decisions but I still do.

I was in a NL $100 live tournament and tried to bluff a hand and after I bet I realized that I was not making a good bluff. I was chip leader round 6 and that cost me a lot of chips.

So, what am I going to do about it?

Start over small and keep at it. Take a break from some games and work my way back to where I was before.

I play to join the $11 NL toruney daily at 6 PM PST.

If I made the right decision and still lost I am not going to fret about it. If I made the wrong decision I will try not to do that again.

Danm, why did not I fold that AKs? I knew it was a coin flip at best.Of course he had KK
Don't lose your entire stack in an unraised pot or with only one pair.

Thanks - yes I am ahead on the jackpot for sure and before the JP I was winning more often than losing.

Of course I miss the money, but, I do not miss the money as much as I do not like the trend - if I keep this trend up I will lose my Jackpot winning back in about a year.

I need, like you said, to get my discipline back. In the NL game I was playing there are too many players willing to risk their stacks on marginal hands, that over time with cost them, but short term it costs me. There are large swings. As long as I make the right decision I do not mind as much.

I have the bankroll but it is annoying because

the opportunity to double my stack does not seem to present itself as often as the opportunity to lose my stack.

Last week I was playing and got KK and won a big pot. Then the next hand got AA and check raised all in and won another big pot. Within 10 minutes of sitting down I had $540 - then hit the KKKQQ vs. the QQQJJ hand and lost $180 - that was bad play by me. That is what I mean by discipline - I should have folded that QJd in the BB for the $15 MP raise.

Then I proceed to lose $10-20 at a time until I have lost $200 and I give up for the day.

So, I plan play live 4/8 stud and small buyin tournaments until I get my game back on track. I can afford a lot of $11 buyins for one $200 buyin.

Thanks again for your reply.
