I've only just started playing 6-max (~1000 hands) and this is the only hand i've felt like I did something wrong with. My image at the table was TAG btw.

If you check the turn I think you should call the river anyway. He could very well have a weaker kicker that he is valuebetting since you checked behind or a busted draw (QJ, 78) or a lower PP... lots of hands that you beat.
