Two hands against a maniac

Postby Stoneburg » Tue Jul 26, 2005 7:00 pm

This opponent has built a huge stack by playing some draws extremely aggressive, re-raising and calling all-ins with them on the turn, and sucking out on the river. His stats:
vpip: ~70
pfr: 13

mimmi_39 folded
brattlof folded
LennAA folded
Stoneburg raised - $1.20 ($47.94) [Ah] [Qh]
aces001 called - $1.20 ($70.46)
Burre78 folded
the_raf folded
artjeee folded
starsinger folded

Flop $2.70 [5s] [5d] [Qc]
------------------
Stoneburg bet - $2.00
aces001 called - $2.00

Turn $6.70 [Jh]
------------------
Stoneburg checked
aces001 bet - $3.80
Stoneburg raised - $7.60
aces001 called - $7.60

River [Kd]
------------------
Stoneburg bet - $6.00

I checked the turn to induce a bluff, obviously, and since there are no draws I just miniraised to keep him in the pot. The river bet is a valuebet. I figured that he's got to have *something* since he called my flop bet and check-raise on turn, but it's not a 5 and it's weaker than top pair.

A few moments later, this hand takes place.

aces001 : Raises for 1.60
Stoneburg : Calls for 0.80

River $6.20 [Js]

I just called on the flop because I wanted to see a non-spade turn card before I put more money in. If he's on the flush draw he might very well re-raise all-in if I raise him on the flop, and I don't want to have to call that. When he re-raises me on the turn he's got to have something. When the river comes a spade I'm of course not happy, but his bet is so small that I'm fairly sure he doesn't have the flush so I call, even though I am worried about a two pair.

I won both hands, but I would really like to know how I could have played them better, ie: extracted more money.

to extract more money I wouldn't be min raising. If he is playing aggressive and calling down with marginal hands, why make it cheap for him?

Mainly I am miniraising as a way to control him and gain information without making the pot too big. Also, my hands weren't exactly monsters so I wanted to give myself an opportunity to release if I got too much action.

Well, if your hands aren't monsters -- and they're certainly not! -- it doesn't seem like a realistic goal to get more money from them. The only way to extract more is to bet more, but when you do that you lose more to good hands and get weak hands to fold. I think you did fine on both.
