Push every time you're ahead? (6-max)

Postby k3nt » Wed Jan 17, 2007 1:52 pm

So I'm sitting at a Bodog $100 6-max table with this guy who keeps pushing all-in. Doesn't matter what the pot size is, he'll push all his chips in the middle. It doesn't happen every hand or anything stupid, or even every 10 hands, but on a fairly regular basis, whoops, there goes all his money in the middle again. So far nobody has looked him up.

So I catch a set, and bet the pot on the flop ($4 into a $4 pot). He calls and then pushes like $200 into the $12 pot when the board makes a weird straight possibility on the turn (gutshot only got there), something like a J475 board. I say "gotcha this time" and call ... and he flips the straight.

And I start thinking ... maybe his line is a good one. Every time you have the nuts, or close enough to the nuts that you're sure you're ahead, just push in. Every time you can put your opponent on a reasonable range of hands, and you just know you're ahead, just push. Every time. Doesn't matter what the pot size is or anything else. Just push. Nobody will call you the first 3-4 times they see it. But you keep doing it, they'll start thinking "he must be bluffing this time." And eventually someone will get fed up and call and get stacked.

I don't know, it sounds stupid. But I tell you, as an opponent, it's incredibly irritating to see someone keep doing this and "getting away with it." You put a target on their back and resolve to call with any two decent cards the next time you see it. I was so sure I was ahead of this "moron" when I caught my set.... :x

Thoughts?

Sounds like the same strat that Phil Gordon talks about in his Little Green Book.

BOW (Biggest Online Winner) whatever his name is, uses this strategy or something similar to crush the high limit games.

I would be interested to hear if anybody has tried this strategy over a few thousand hands....

It was a good call.

This theory doesn't work. A good hand just doesn't come this often, if you decide to push when you have 1-3rd nuts, you'll be pushing once in a 100 hands, or something like that, hard to get a call in this case.

So you need to mix up some bluff pushes, as soon as 'bluff' part reaches a certain point, more than 50%, you'll opponents will get irritated and will CORRECTLY call your pushes with medium strength hands.

zmej, what I was suggesting was mixing in some pushes when you have a really good read that you're ahead. There are all sorts of hands on BTP where Iceman or whoever writes "I was sure I was ahead on the turn." I'm suggesting you push every time you find yourself in that kind of situation as well.

I pushed $240 into a $200 pot (multiway) and got a caller last night. The board was

[Jh] [7h] [9c]

Turn [Qc]

River [8c]

My callers had [Th] [8h] and some random TP hand (short donk)

I held [Jc] [Tc] for the mawfucking nuts

If you pick your spots this is a good idea.

Well, another example when overbet push was correct.

Seat 1: Fish ($539.60 in chips)
Seat 2: Hero [Js] [Qh] ($419.00 in chips)
Seat 5: 2drunk4you ($387.00 in chips)
Seat 8: zwetschkn ($665.40 in chips)
Seat 10: Polydoor ($191.40 in chips)
ANTES/BLINDS
zwetschkn posts blind ($2), Polydoor posts blind ($4).

PRE-FLOP
Fish calls $4, Hero calls $4, 2drunk4you folds, zwetschkn folds, Polydoor checks.

FLOP [7d] [Ac] [Kh]
Polydoor checks, Fish bets $4, Hero calls $4, Polydoor folds.

TURN [6h]
Fish checks, Hero checks.

RIVER [Td]
Fish checks, Hero bets $15, Fish bets $35, Hero bets $396 and is all-in, Fish calls $376.

SHOWDOWN
Hero shows [Js] [Qh]
Fish shows [Ah] [Ad]
Hero wins $841.
