Derosa I don't know too well but 3 mill a year doesn't get you much these days (solid role player?). Edmonds will earn 10 this year for the cardinals, even though he's my favourite player I've still gotta say "ugh" (though he's obv. a better player than Derosa even playing hurt).

El Duque, well.... pitching's gonna cost money with so little of it about and demand very high, so even a solid low-rotation starter who's a good fit in his team is going to be worth a reasonable amount. I agree 6 mill a year for a banged-up veteran is not great but I doubt you'll get much better than a fully fit Hernandez for that sort of moolah in free agency this year.

Gary Matthews is the clinker for me without a doubt. He was obviously looking for somewhere willing to give him a big payoff with a long term deal but that sort of length contract for a guy of that age, paying him 10 mill a year just stinks. Arguably the best player on the list barring Soriano but for me he's in a similar boat to Edmonds - coming to the twilight of his career (though obviously he's got a few years to make up on Edmonds) and IIRC has had a knock or two in the last few years; except Edmonds is on his option for one year, they've given Matthews five. Anyonw care to guess if this guy will be worth ten mill for the season in his late 30s? I'd say not, and now they can't offload him anywhere either if they want to change the dynamic of the team because I'd be surprised if anyone else will match that contract.

Juan Pierre comes close but at least he does what he does well and should be more or les in his prime - he's a gamble but a solid top of the order guy and has killer speed. Of course that's a crazy contract for no more than a decent table-setter. His style actually fits into the Dodger's small ball offense perfectly which may be why they paid over the odds to get him...

Mike Stanton isn't a player I know but based on those numbers it seems like they've just panicked and picked up a free agent that some pitching coach or scout thinks can do a job for them somewhere. Like I said there's not much pitching to be had so agents will be selling their guys at a premium, even guys like this...

If those guys were footballers they'd be underpaid.

In contrast someone like A-Rod (baseball player Alex Rodriguez) is on a contract at the New York Yankees which pays something like $25m per year, basic. And he had a pretty mediocre year last time round

I think Lambard has a salary of £140k/week. That's $270k. 270kx52=14 million.

Lampard: $14.000.000/year

Only Alfonso makes more than that. The other makes peanuts like 6 or 10 million. Shesh, how is that going to motivate you to hit a ball when you're constantly worrying about not being able to afford your third Ferrari until next season?
