What can we do to help online poker?

Postby kennyg » Tue Oct 24, 2006 12:55 am

I've joined (donated) to the poker player's alliance. I've called and written my congressmen and senators.

Now what?

A guy on another forum had a good idea about getting poker players to donate to democrats in swing states (while taking screenshots of donations and reason why etc etc, and mailing them out to senators.)

That is a neat idea. But I just don't see everyone donating money like that.

We need more fresh ideas like that though. Got any?

This ban was a part of the Republican Family Values Agenda (tm). It was NOT a part of the Democrat platform in any way shape or form. There's no way in hell the Democrats would have passed this bill, even if they are now trying weakly to gain favor with the religious right, too little too late. The Republican party is being held hostage by this group, and Frist is pandering to it, or a leader of it. I'm not sure which.

Ice, surely you wanted to throw up when you wrote that? Please tell us you didn't really think it. You may want to believe it, but deep down in your heart, you know your party is letting you down, right? (Much the same feeling I had when the Monica Lewinsky stuff came out.)

Ice, you're a smart guy, but you don't pay attention to politics. And I know you feel like you have good reasons not to. But on an issue like this, it's really important.

Everybody voted for the online poker bill because it was attached to the port security act, which HAD to pass. But the only reason it got attached to the port security act is because a few Republicans, acting alone, put it there.

You gotta pay attention to the way politics really works. The final vote on an issue is very often not the important thing. In the case of poker, the final vote was completely meaningless. All that mattered was the small session of deal-brokering prior to the vote. No Democrats were involved in that session.

How do I know that? Because no Democrats are ever involved in any of these sessions. That's the way the Republicans are running the national government these days. All of the important stuff happens behind closed doors, and only Republicans are invited behind the doors. Then they ram it through. Bipartisanship is totally dead.

Anyway, to the original question. I have not much to add, except to second that you should call your Senators and Representatives. If you live in a state that has banned online poker specifically, I would also get on the horn to your state representatives and senators. Let the governor know how you feel, too. Hell, even if you don't live in a state like that, it's worth letting the powers that be know how you feel, at every level of government.
