Juskimos right. The issue is not that private people cant play thier favorite songs when they feel like, but rather that, for some reason playing in a muzic store has been deemed a violation of the TM holders right of public performenace, which is an exclusive right held by TM holders in thier own compositions. Like jus said, if hes showin crap at home with his friends its okay because its a private use, but if hes chargin money, or if his theater is too big and seats like, say a hundred people (theres lots of case law regarding specific situations that do or dont constitute 'public performances'), then he hasnt got the right to perform and/or display the composition without a license, which you have to buy.

Wasn't it Waynes World that had the sign in the music store reading "No playing Stairway to Heaven allowed"?

I used to always play The Trees by Rush when I tested out a new guitar. A little finger picking in the beginning, then some power chords, then a lead that moved around the higher ends of the neck. Gave me a nice feel for everything, plus not too many people know the song in case I screwed up. :D

Yah, Wayne's World had the "No Stairway" sign. Actually, I hea a lot of guitar stores have that sign up now

I usually just used a bunch of parts of different songs to test a guitar. Start off with finger tapping from Eruption, go to the pick tapping in One, play a load of harmonics with Cemetery Gates (Pantera), and then do some rythym and lead stuff from whatver I've been recently learning.

Then for cleans/slight overdrive channel, I'd play sweet home alabama 8-)

I guess now I'll just have to see if I can sweep or something, and if I can, buy the guitar :P

You have an alverez? Nice, man! That's way better than what I've got... there are lots of videos for electric guitar, but acoustic... hm.

Normally I'd recommend a few tabs, but as I can't do that anymore, I'm not sure. Well if you know chords, I'd say work on lead work. If you like blues at all, I'd highly recommend looking for a blues guitar book. It'll help you with both chord knowledge, and lead guitar work. Other than that, maybe see if you can find a led zeppelin book, maybe Jimmy Page has made one or two videos - not sure. His sort of stuff would be playable on an accoustic, definately.

If you're semi-serious about it, I'd highly recommend a teacher. I've only be playing a little over a year and I can out-play all the people who've been playing for 5-10 years without a teacher around here - All because I had a teacher the whole way who would push my limits a lot quicker than I would have if I had learned by myself.

i have a couple of hundred tabs if anyone is interested i can zip and email them.

I learned entirely from books and by ear, but my ear isn't the greatest.

CJ, start with stuff you know and grab a couple of easy chord books, say maybe the eagles, or neil young, simple stuff. Work out the rhythms till youre comfortable with them, then move on to some easy tab stuff.

I have a stack of books going back to Eagles, America, Beatles, Chicago. Jimmy Buffet's Songs You Know by Heart has tabs, but I never could figure out how to play them. Would love to learn. The teacher is probably the best idea. If I could get some time.

Yah I would just get a teacher, and tell him more or less, what your goals are. If you aren't looking to be a revolutionary guitarist or anything like that, let him/her know that. One thing a lot of teachers assume, is that their student wants to be great. A lot of guys just wanna learn how to play some of their favorite songs, and leave it at that. If that's the case, let him know. No point on spending 2 hours a day for 6 months learning how to sweep as fast as Steve Vai, if you just wanna jam some eagles every now and then, y'know?
