It's gambling. It's +EV gambling. +EV gambling will make you money in the long run if you manage your BR properly. Like rolling a 6-sided die where if it comes up 1-2-3-4 I win 5 bucks, and if it comes up 5-6 you win 5 bucks. I'd love to play that game all day. Hell, I'd play it online if they offered it. When we're playing well, poker is the closest we have to that game. :)

I think everybody knows the answer. But it's fun to come back to remember what we're doing, every once in a while.

I dont consider poker gambling. Im not betting on an uncertain outcome. I am 100% absolutley certain that I will win at poker. In the long run of course. The long run can be longer sometimes than it is other times, but still I will win in the long run. There is no doubt in my mind. Therefore its not gambling.

Every individual hand, the outcome is uncertain, but the fact remains that if you are better than the players that you are playing with on a regular basis, then you WILL win in the long run and therefore the outcome in not uncertain.

I explain it to family and friends as follows:

I am marginally better than my opponents because I make fewer mistakes than they do. By playing enough hands, this marginal difference is noticeable. So, I may not see a difference in 1000 hands, but in 25000, that slight edge will be noticeable.

I gave a friend of mine, the most naturally card player I have ever met, $250 as a starter roll - he grew it a bit but lost interest and is off playing Magic the Gathering again at the moment.

He just doesn't have the passion for Poker even though when I watched him play over his shoulder so far as I could see he didn't make any mistakes even as a newbie...

He's about 25 yrs old, has a dead end job not far off minimum wage and could absolutely cane any limit I've ever played at if he could be bothered...I've tried explaining to him that a 6 figure tax free income is there for the taking but I don't think he really believes me

Some people have the talent, some the discipline, some the love of the game - I have a small amout of talent (that generally consists of quick-thinking and constant questioning), hardly any discipline (still trying to get my 6 max VIp under 35% !) but a great deal of love of the game.

Your (and your roommate's) mileage may vary

A 6-figure tax-free income is there for the taking?

Hell, *I* don't believe you.

If you live in the USA, the tax-free is impossible and the 6-figure is, well, it's tough as Kenny and Xaston are finding out.

If you live in Britain, the tax-free is possible. But if you're trying to make 100,000 british pounds per year -- that would be really, really hard, I would think.

Yeah, what does "FYP" mean? Maybe this needs to go in the acronym thread.
