well... i've got 7998 songs on my hard drive right now, so it's tough for me to pick favorite, but i'll give you the latest 6 bands i've been listening to on my playlist.

1, like danhdan, is Jime Croce. listen to him. bad bad leeroy brown, time in a bottle, lover's cross, definatly some of the best songs every written
2, if you like croce, check out joe cocker - my personal favorites being summer int he city, n'oubliez jamais, and what becomes of the broken hearted. all amazing songs.
3, if you're looking for something good, but incredibly different, check out a group called -E.S. Posthumus. the song Antissa is fantastic. their stuff is just a completely off the wall soundtrack of music, but it's amazing. definatly worth the 45 minutes it takes to listen to.
4: Disturbed. hands down my favorite band. the believe album has some absolutely amazing rock sounds, and the lyrics are something out of this world - a mix of religion, spirituality, politics (albeit nothing really that original here) and an amazing voice from david draimen make this my favorite album. their newest one, ten thousand fists, is awesome. these two are a must have, imo, for anyone who likes semi-hard rock.
5: Coheed & Cambria. they're definatly an aquired taste, especially the lead singer. their lyrics can be incredibly dark, and downright creepy at points, but once you learn to appreciate the voice, their sounds are so unique that they're hard to ignore. Favorite songs would have to be the suffering, everything evil, ten sped, welcome home, three evils, and junesong provision
6: HIM. one of the many recent finnish bands, definatly the best to come out of that country in recent memory. ignore the typical emo kids wearing the heartagram logo everywhere you look, the bottom line is this band is amazing. i'm not a particularly huge fan of the new album, though vampire heart and rip out the wings of a butterfly are good tunes. but their earlier two albums - razorblade romance, and deep shadows and brilliant highlights, are amazing - your sweet 666, heartache every moment, beautiful, love you like i do, right here in my arms, and razorblade kiss are amazing.

Check each of these guys out. they're not all exactly eclectic, and being a rock fan i'm sure you've familar with a lot of this, but it's all amazing stuff.

of course, ask again next week and i'll probably have another list of bands i'm currently listening to relentlessly

Fans of Waits really should check out Captain Beefheart, responsible for the broadening of TW's style from the Swordfishtrombone album onwards. Start with the accessible Clear Spot album and never look back.

For straighter 4/4 rock music you could do worse than looking up critics' top 100 rock albums, where you'll probably find some slightly lesser-known gems such as:
Television - Marquee Moon
The MC5 - Kick Out The Jams
The Stooges - Fun House & Raw Power
Patti Smith - Horses
and others

If you're into hard rock I still think Zeppelin set a standard in terms of songwriting and guitar/drum dynamics that no one I've heard since has matched. Their Physical Graffiti album is possibly their best.
