I don't think this has gotten any worse over time. It has probably gotten better. Assassinations are rare - we have not had one in quite some time. Power corrupts, it always has. There is something very seductive about power. Identifying with those in power allows people to wield power vicariously. Dehumanizing those that would wrest power from a person, or a group that person identifies with, is simply a way to deal with a threat.
Power and politics go hand in hand. People will go to extraordinary lengths to seize or maintain power. This is aplicable at all levels of government, right down to high school student body elections. As a student I was the election commissioner in law school. I ran the elections and enforced the election rules. It is amazing how vitriolic the campaigning is. But, you see, being law school student bar president is quite the resume builder, directly translates into the potential for greater power in the future, and therefore the stakes are quite high.
