A friend of mine had a hardrock/kandyrock band in college and they did a version of "momma said knock you out" that was awsome. If you are in any way heavy metalish and have a lead singer that can scream "MOMMA SAID KNOCK YOUUUUU OUTTTTTT" into a mike, then I would give it a shot.

Haha, I'll try it. And yeah, we're a metal band but we listen to a lot of softer stuff as well so we can do more or less anything. Keep 'em coming.

How about a metal version of Unsquare Dance by Dave Brubeck? Now that WOULD be something...

A rock version of Snoop's Loddy Doddy would kick ass. For fan interest I would also recommend Crazy Train by Ozzy , Drive My Car by the Beatles, I shot the Sherriff by Marley/Clapton, Cocaine by Clapton, All along the WatchTower by Hendrix, MachineHead by Bush, Big Pimpin Rock Version.....

...just a bunch of randoms.

Drive My Car is a definite, I think that could work. Cocaine might too, though I'm not as fond. I shot the sherriff - ugh. I think Watchtower would be too technically difficult to do justice to unless you're an unbelievably good rock/blues type guitarist - see U2's rather limp cover version for reference. Best cover of that song I know is by a brit band called The Hamsters (check it out for download, you'll be impressed) but I think it's too hard to top the Hendrix version. Prob a crowd pleaser though.

If you want to throw in a Hendrix song, Purple Haze is probably an easier choice and just as recognisable I guess?

All very good recomendations, gonna have to download some of them cause I don't really know that much classic rock sort of stuff. Here's my list pre-reccomendations. These are all songs that I either know how to play, or would be easy to learn and should be a good crowd pleaser.

Ozzy - Crazy train
The Darkness - I believe in a thing called love
Sublime - What I got
Bush - Glycerine (my own metal version)
Sister Hazel - All for you
Smashing pumpkins - Disarm (might play it metal like)
Goo goo dolls - Iris
Eagle Eye Cherry - Save tonite
Eve 6 - Inside out
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Scar Tissue or City of Angels
Skynyrd - Sweet Home Alabama or FreeBird (without the gay solo :-p)
Offspring - The kids are alright (might do evergreen Terrace version)
Foo Fighters - Everlong

I reeeeeally like that album, though I never listen to it now. If you're going to do a Smashing Pumpkins song might I recommend "Sweet, Sweet" or whatever it's called off Melon Collie (I don't think I've ever sat through that entire dire record but for some reason that song has stuck with me...) and I love "Ava Adore" as well.
