Actually, I used to watch Maher back when he was on late night on ABC. He had a show that ran for a few years, pretty much close to what he does now...commentary, guests. I am a fan of Jon Stewart, but really the 'Senior Correspondents' make the show funny IMO. They had a really good group for the past 5-7 years, with Colbert, Carell before and now with Samantha Bee, Aasif Mandvi, Jon Oliver and the others. Mandvi is probably the best correspondent right now IMO. And then Presidential candidates past and present come on the show and Stewart makes fun of them.
Plus, it's hard to make a show funny for a week, but they pretty much do it...although the government does it's best to make sure they never run out of material.
