I moraly opposed to the death penalty to begin with. Other than revenge for the familys there is no real purpose to the death penalty, and yes I did say revenge not justice. It costs more to put someone to death than it does to keep someone alive in jail for 40 years. If the death penalty isnt cruel and unusal punshment than I dont know what is. Taking someone life (despite their crimes) is cruel, and since less than 1% of people that commit death penalty eligable offense's actually are sentanced and executed, that definatly makes it unusual. The death penalty is also one of the most rasict/sexist laws we have. A black/ latino man that commits a death penalty eligable crime is 8 times more like to be sentanced to death than a white man. Men that commit death penalty eligable crimes are 50 times more likely to be sentance to death than woman. Final point, putting someone to death is the most final punishment for their crime When DNA evidence first became available numerous people were exonerated for crimes they were jailed for. Who is to say that in X years we wont come up with new technology that proves these people innocent (Tookie Williams still claims he is innocent). It is kind of hard to say sorry we screwed up when they have already been exectued.
80 proof, they arent talking about letting him free, they are talking about commuting his death sentance, to life in prison without the possibility of parol.
