The older you get, the more rules they are going to try and get you to follow. You just gotta keep on livin', man. L-I-V-I-N. - Wooderson

I understand where you are coming from. I did a 3 year enlistment and near the end I was VERY eager to get out and move on to other things. I think that was also my rationalization for only do 3 years. At the time I compared it to my time in high school. I was in high school 4 years and by my senior year I was really wanting to get out of there. A 3 year enlistment was less than 4 years of high school. Cool, I can do 3 years. May not be the best way to look at it, but it made sense to me.

[quote="Big_Leon"Second, you need to make sure you are honestly ready to give up 3-5 years of your life. [/quote]

You also have to realise you may be giving your life completely.

Relating to the Navy and being stuck on a boat for months at a time, one of my friends works for ADT alarms and there are a few guys who worked on submarines and apparently they're a little weird. Maybe they were like that before or maybe complete lack of daylight and never even having a bunk of your own will do that to you. I don't know but being in a tube in the middle of the ocean would freak me out.

As Ice said do well on your ASVAB test and you can pretty much call the shots as to what field you want to take up. As a musician you should also be aware that all the branches have bands, orchestra, etc. I nearly went into that field before choosing an alternative area. That would give you a chance to continue with your music, make some money, see the world and hopefully give you some experiences and time to decide where you want to go and what you want to do following your time in the military.

If you have other viable options though I would recommend pursuing those before taking the military route. Like playing 1-2 Omaha H/L and getting yourself enrolled in a community college somewhere to knock out some of the basics that you are going to have to take whether you enroll in Harvard or Podunk U. If you are going to school for the right reasons and pushing yourself to obtain the most from your time there it doesn't matter where you get your undergraduate degree from in my opinion although as a musician this might be of greater importance. That still doesn't take away the fact that the first two years of college are mainly spent taking a wide sampling of core classes from many areas that can be done cheaply at a community college.

Today, the Coast Guard will:

Save 15 lives

Assist 117 people in distress

Conduct 90 search and rescue cases

Protect $2.8 million in property

Enforce 129 security zones

Interdict and rescue 15 illegal migrants at sea

Board 4 high interest vessels

Board 192 vessels of law enforcement interest

Board 122 large vessels for port safety checks

Seize 71 pounds of marijuana and 662 pounds of cocaine with a street value of 21.1 million

Conduct 317 vessel safety checks and teach 63 boating safety courses

Conduct 19 commercial fishing vessel safety exams

Respond to 11 oil and hazardous chemical spills

Process 280 mariner licenses and documents

Service 140 aids to navigation

Monitor the transit of 2,557 commercial ships through U.S. ports

Investigate 20 vessel casualties involving collisions, allisions and groundings

So, gee, since Coasties aren't out killing people but are only saving lives while risking their own, keeping terrorists from entering ports, coordinating with other military branches and Homeland Security, keeping a shitload of drugs out of the country and generally performing useful tasks, I guess they are not real military.
