Was This Genius or Stupid

Postby T-Rod » Thu Oct 06, 2005 8:11 am

MHFlush posted a hand recently where he had top two on the flop, pushed, and lost to bottom set. The consensus was there's not much you can do there. forum/viewtopic.php?t=7229

Prima 6-max $100NL. Two limpers, I limp in LP with K[h] J[d], button min bets ($2). Limpers call and I call.

Flop (pot $9.50)--- K[d] J[c] 8[h]. Well dip me in chocolate and throw me to lesbians, that's about as good a flop as I could hope for.

I bet $8. Button calls and all others fold. Hmm. He min bet pf which usually means small pocket pair or Axs.

Turn was a brick ($25.50). I check and button bets $15. At this point, my read is he has a set of 8s. Button is a TAG. Yet I called.

River was a blank, he bet 1/3 pot and I called. He had 8[d] 8[c].

So the question is should I have put in a raise somewhere to test or was my check/call approach better?

that's a heck of a read, but i tend to think it's too cautious, especially for 6-max. check-call per se is ok since you're suspicious (and rightly so) and the board is rainbow-ish...but for me, top two is more than enough hand to bet on the turn, and i would make a nice bet because of the straight draws. given a check, i would checkraise.

88 is the only hand you can really be afraid of. there are a number of hands he could have here that can pay off KJ.

I don't think any other line was going to get you to a showdown cheaper. Any raise you would have made would have cost you more money than the check/call. When your read says you are beat but you hold a little more hand than you would like to fold I don't think this is a bad play. You still have a few outs on the river (though drawing thin as it turned out) plus you get a little more information on how villain plays his monster.

First of all you want to be thrown into a pit with bi-sexual hot chicks..not lesbians :)

I would have bet the turn and lost more money on the hand. He could be calling with a draw, KQ, AK, etc etc. But if you have a read on the guy, by all means, use it! it obviously saved you a lot of money in this spot.

Nice play - I can only handle one hot chick at a time b/c of my age - but a nice way to go out

I may have lost more but there is merit to how you played it, especially if he will bet a draw. You save yourself money if he has 88 but if he has QT, you let him try and semibluff you on the turn and bluff you on the river and you make more money off him when he has that.
