set hand #2

Postby kennyg » Wed Aug 03, 2005 1:17 am

Prima 1/2 (EDITED)

I'm dealt [6c][6h] UTG. I limp.. 1 more limper and the BB raises to $10. The BB is an absoulte rock. He plays only top ten...his raise here in EP signifes a monster. I call as does the limper. We all have about $200.

FLOP $31 (there wasn't 3 to the flush..i screwed up)
[6d][4d][7h]

BB (rock) bets $16. I strongly though about cold calling here...but I didn't want the limper to get a cheap look at a draw..plus i wanted to build the pot. I raise to $40. Limper folds but rock calls.

TURN $$111
[6d][4d][7h][4c]

Opponent checks. I check. I think this was a mistake. I was hoping the draws wouldn't hit on the river..and rock would bet his overpair..but that's plain foolish. He'd be stupid to bet anymore money into this hand, no matter what the river is. I believe at this point I should have made a value bet..like $25...just to build the pot. Thoguhts???

RIVER $111
[6d][4d][7h][4c][5c]

Well one of the draws hit. Opponent checks...I bet $60..hoping he'll think i'm bluffing. He does and calls with [As][Ad].

Thoughts on how to play this differently??

is he a smart rock? is he a winning player?

if he's solid, i think he'll smell a boat and muck if you bet $60 on the turn, in which case i think you played it fine to get money out of a really tight guy.

if he's a rock, but dumb, i don't mind a $60 bet on the turn and another on the river. clearly he looks like he's got red aces or kings here, with an outside chance at a nifty [Ad][Kd]. obviously you're going to have a hard time getting paid off on that flop.

I think the only other possible play is an all in on the turn. the overbet may look suspicious, and he won't likely put you on a flopped flush (and may convince himself that he has enough outs on the offchance that you do hav esomething like [Kd][Qd]. he also isn't likely to believed that you'd play a made boat like that. and since it seems clear that he has a monster, i think it's entirely possible that he could put you on something as small as [5d]5. .

personally, i think i would have gone with the all in on the turn against a rock, hoping it looked like a bluff.

That does sound like a good idea.

I was thinking in the post of just betting small to build the pot some more...but I can certainly see the merit of moving all-in there. It really does look like a bluff..and that board pair improved his "obvious" holdings.

Just one additional comment: Rocks can make mistakes in difficult hands just like everyone else. I see no reason to play overly tricky against them (I think there's often a risk of outfoxing oneself), although this is a rare case where he does make a mistake (maybe he isn't such a great rock).

Anyhow, if you think about it, why should the turn possibly slow you down here? The rock obviously doesn't have a boat but might have AdKd as well as a big pair with a diamond. In both cases, these hands are going to be tough to lay down, particularly if you've represented a lot of strength on the flop. I'd just let him make a mistake, if he's willing to do so (and his river behavior makes it look to me like he might). If he doesn't, well, so be it...

I would bet he calls a pot sized bet on the turn with an over pari and ace high flush draw. Not to mention he has 2 more boat outs. No way he drops that hand on the turn. I would have bet the pot on the turn and a value bet on the river. I am sure he calls both.

The flop raise is fine, but could be bigger also. If you dont make it bigger you have to be ready to fold to a big turn bet if the flush hits (barring having odds of course)

I bet the turn at least 1/2 pot.

If you tell me who it is, I can give you a better read.

Player1 WILL NOT FOLD AA. You have to get all in against him when you flop a set.
Milk him, check raise him....do whatever you have to , but get all in.

Hes good other than not being able to fold an overpair. Also, if he raises preflop and checks the flop....bet the flop no matter what you have and no matter what is showing on the flop.

i had a similar situation on monday where a known rock raised me and another limper when i had bottom set on an all of one suit flop. i folded, he had the nut flush [the muppet called with 2 pai] and the turn/river cards paired which wouldve given the winning hand.

on the same day i had bottom set on a 678 flop with 78 being hearts. i bet pot and a goofball [based on scientific poker observation] raised me - i put him on the draw and re-raised all in [ i had him way covered. he had A6 hearts, and missed the turn and river.

but i think my fold on hand 1 may have been too tight, and my re-raise on hand 2 too loose - who knows...i went with my gut.
