Am I a donk?

Postby droqqa » Wed Aug 10, 2005 10:45 am

Nearing the end of a 10/20 NL session, sitting on about 2800. Get [5s] [7s] in MP, 2 limpers, I limp as well. One more limper after me, SB completes, and then the BB raises to 100. He has me covered. The 2 EP limpers fold, and I decide to call. The other limper and the SB fold.

BB is an OK player and has doubled up against a moron, so his stack size is not necessarily indicative of his playing skill. He is on the weak-tight side. Desipite the sub-optimal cards, I decided to call for 4 reasons: 1) I got the feeling that BB had a very big hand, like AA, KK, QQ, or AK. Thus, if I hit, I would likely get paid off. I also got the feeling that he thought his raise was big, but really, with 4 limpers in, his raise wasn't big at all. 2) The pot odds were good, with the dead money in the pot. 3) The stacks were pretty deep. 4) I had position, and I thought I might be able to outplay him, since I have been playing super-tight all night long.

Flop [Ac] [3c] [4c] Pot = $280.

BB bets $280, the full pot. I call.

Once again, I decide to call here. I think that he is scared of something, with the full pot bet. It's either the ace or the club. I think there is a very good chance I can get him to fold on the turn. If a club comes and he checks, I got him. If a club doesnt come and he checks, I can take a free card or try to move him off of KK, QQ, etc... OR, in the alternative, I have outs, with the double gutter. No chance he has the flush.

Turn [Ac] [3c] [4c] [6h] Pot = $840

BB bets $800. I call. OK. I am sure I have the best hand, and I also think he has AA, or AK with the Kc. If the board doesnt pair the river, I'm getting it all-in. I probably should have moved in here, but lets ignore that for now.

River [Ac] [3c] [4c] [6h] [9s] Pot = $2480.

BB bets $1200, I move-in for my remaining 600 or so, he calls.

OK -

1) Did I play horribly in this hand?
2) What does BB have?

Thoughts / comments?

I dont play those type hands heads up, but its fine sometimes.

I really dont like that flop for tryin to take it away from him, but if you do, I think you need to make a move on the flop before he gets too deep to fold if he has something like [Ah][Kc]. UGH. Even if he has that I dont like this flop for trying to steal the pot.

i dont think you can take it unless he has KK with no [c] or QQ with no [c].
Ok, you called the flop. I think you have to move in on the turn. Hes in deep now and wont fold a [Ah][Kc] or AA.

I think he has AA or [Ah][Kc] but Im leaning towards AA.

I really dont like this one Droqqa, but I do think you won.

the only thing this guy could have is KQc to beat you. Any other reasonable hand to raise out of the bb would either contain and ace or not 2 clubs unless he was trying to be frisky with a suited connector of clubs. If you are confident, I would have raised the turn. However, I think he made a huge mistake on the river if he doesn't have the flush.

I agree with ice that I don't this play to try to take it away from him because it could take you a lot of money to find out your are wrong.

I have to think you won here by the fact that he would have to be a maniac to raise out of the BB with that many limpers with 2 clubs.

Yes, you are a donk.

You put him on a big hand but then expect to take the pot away from him? If he has AA, AK or KK with [Kc] maybe even QQ with [Qc], do you really think he'll fold?

If you have been playing super-tight, the only reasonable hand he can put you on here is a set and if he has AA, he doesn't have to worry about that.

I think you should have pushed on the turn while you were sure you were ahead.

I think he has AK with the [Kc]

from the looks of it, he had a set of aces and he thought you were chasing a flush. as others have seaid, the only mistake i see here is that you didn't push all-in on the river, which is definitely weird if you thought he might have had a Kc

The reaons I would bet a full pot is to see where you are in the hand. You bet full after a preflop raise you are giving the other guy a lot of reasons to fold his hand. Even with a set of aces on that board I would be happy to take it down there. If there is a big re-raise you can get away from the hand. If you bet small with deep stacks you are sweetening the odds if someone was drawing to the four flush and not willing to let it go. This is likely if there have you put him on a big pair with a possible set as you know you might still be able to stack him if you hit your hand as he might not drop it.

My thoughts.

Thank you all for the very harsh criticism. I did play this hand badly, but I did win. My opponent showed me [Ah] [Kd]. I was very surprised.

I almost didn't post this hand, as immediately afterward, all I could think was - "Wow that was a nice pot, and my opponent made a gigantic mistake on the river."

Upon, further reflection though, I played it pretty bad too. I dont really have a problem with my preflop call, I think that it could be profitable in the long term with the extra money in the pot and position. But my flop call is another matter. As most of you pointed out, I greatly overestimated my ability to get my opponent to fold.

But truthfully, against THIS opponent, I really wouldnt hesitate to make this or a similar play again, if he is going to make $1800 mistakes on the river. Against a good opponent though, I should reel it in.

Thanks for the criticism all!
