Bad read ouch

Postby AlamedaMike » Mon Sep 12, 2005 11:56 am

The $200 NL game that I play is somewhat a loose game and you can win or lose a $200 stack in a flash.

This was a bad read by me which lead to a bad play.

I was MP with a very marginal hand [As] [5s] and called a $12 raise from the BB after I limped.

I know that this is ill advised but my question is not the wisdom or lack thereof preflop but my flop play.

The flop was [Ad] [8d] [5d] and the BB lead out with a $50 bet into a $60 pot. The struck me as a hand like [As] [Kd] rather than [8s] [8c]. I have played with this player sever times and know him pretty well. I played a flopped flush vs. my set with him one time before. I have at least 25 hours of play againt him. He had been up most of the night and been drinking beer. But, he is still a force to be reckoned with.

In any event. I had $160 since I had just sat down and he had about $600 or so.

I had two pair and I am sure he did not have the flush but there was a good chance he had the [Kd].

If he had [Kd] and [Kh] then I was ahead. If he had the [Ac] [Kd] then it was a coin toss pretty much.

If he had a set or a flush I was in big trouble.

I went with my 2 reads and pushed my $160 into the $110 pot. He said later that he though I had the flush but he figured he had outs. - He of course, called.

Now, please tell me how bad this was  and if I should give up poker or just try harder? BTW, I ended up winning for the day and did beat him a few times. Flopping trip Queens with the ace kicker helped. :D

I played 3 hands poorly and this is one of them - one other screw up was the Queen Nine. The third was I flopped a set of 5's and did not get full value from it.

His hand is in white below.

He had Ace Eight for two pair and won the pot.

As an aside note on this game which really depends on the player. I was able to more than double up with [Ks] [Kd] against [Js] [Jh].

I raised $15 UTG and got 4 callers. The flop came Ten high and I went all-in with $150 and got one call.

I totally bear my soul on this forum and the people here are kind and gentle with me. True corrective criticism and never mean or rude. Much more than I can say about other forums.

I appreciate it very much. THANKS

This is why you don't call A5 for a significant preflop raise ;-)

The way the hand played out, I would have called the flop and moved all-in on the turn, barring a diamond. Reason being... if he has something like A[Kd], my odds are much better to win the hand when the turn is a blank. I wouldn't have gotten away from the hand either.

The real issue is the call preflop.
