the cost of living is really high compared to DR, but compared to cities in the Northeast corridor (e.g., DC, Philly, NYC, Boston) and big cities on the west coast (e.g., LA, SF, Seattle, etc.), it's comparable if you live in Tokyo or Osaka and cheaper if you live elsewhere.
japan has been in a LONG deflationary period, so prices on a lot of day-to-day things have gone down a lot. sometimes you have to look around to find a good price, but it's not really that hard.
most of the students on scholarship have a pretty good lifestyle -- much better than scholarship students in the US from what I can tell.
