Critique the river

Postby shobute » Thu Nov 10, 2005 2:25 am

(Sorry, screwed up this post. Restored it.)

2/4, MP has 400 and I cover.
He lost a big pot to me a while ago when I turned two pair.
Hasn't done anything out of line, but may be steaming a bit.

One limper and MP to me in the SB with [Ad] [Kh].
I raise to $20, MP calls.

Flop [Kd] [8d] [3h].
I bet $25, MP calls.

Turn [6h].
I bet $40, MP calls.

River [Ac].
I bet $110, MP pushes for $240 more.

Questions:

1) Do you call? If so, what does he have?
2) What do you think of my river bet?

Personally I think he has a set. If he were tilting, he would have acted earlier. He just called down because he was so strong he didn't have to raise to protect.

A busted flush draw is possible..or maybe something like A3??

I think you're a losing but that is a tough fold.

hmm...if you didnt have [Ad] then villain could have [Ad][3d] or [Ad][6d]. but without that possibility and without any reads...i tend to think he has you with a set. i probably call anyway with top 2.....i figure you'll see a missed flush draw or a weird 2 pair or something else at least some of the time. but with the appropriate read on villain, i could see a fold, too.

edit: i think i prefer check-calling the river. he's either drawing or he's slowplaying a set, and its much more likely that he'll bluff-bet than that he'll bluff-raise all-in.

In hindsight I think I should check too.
When he pushed my bones said he had a set.

The problem is that I'd basically priced myself in with my river bet.
I couldn't fold top-two for that price against someone who could be tilting.

So I called and he showed [4d] [6d].

Is it just me or is this move really popular right now?
Betting hard on the river with a missed flush, I mean.

Burns' suit! Burns' suit!
I agree with the call...only hand you fear is 88.

I can't believe you guys actually think a check here is called for, and also a fold to the all in. If you're not betting top two on a ragged board on the river, I think you're missing out on a lot of value.

that's why you don't play NL full time xaston :) Sets are the bane to TPTK or an overpair.

The reason we like a check on the river, is that you give the oppertunity for a busted flush to bluff, and you give a set the oppertunity to value bet, instead of take your stack. Luckily, this guy was donking it up either way.

I'm sure ice would agree with this assement.

we check the river because villain either has a set or a busted flush draw. the Ace doesnt change anything......we still beat a busted draw and lose to a set. and a lot of people will bluff a busted draw, especially when something like an Ace hits on the river. this river action *gains* value for AK....it doesnt lose out on anything
