Raising AA preflop and facing 5 callers... What to do?

Postby mecha » Wed Nov 09, 2005 5:30 pm

Background: CO has AA. He is a loose aggressive player. Hero is TAG and UTG+1 is overly tight (VPIP10%), and aggressive.

Question: My question is not related to HERO's hand, but how would you have played this enormous pot with AA, if you were the CO against 5 callers against your preflop raise against a ragged flop. Do you go broke on the flop? I think he played it very poorly on the flop by making such a small bet. But made a good fold on the turn. Thoughts?

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (9 handed)

UTG ($205.95)
UTG+1 ($197)
MP1 ($108.95)
Hero ($196.70)
MP3 ($174.60)
CO ($181.20)
Button ($91)
SB ($100.25)
BB ($225.30)

Preflop: Hero is MP2 with [3c], [3h].
1 fold, UTG+1 calls $2, 1 fold, Hero calls $2, MP3 calls $2, CO raises to $13, Button calls $13, 1 fold, BB calls $11, UTG+1 calls $11, Hero calls $11, MP3 calls $11.

Flop: ($79) [2s], [3s], [3d] (6 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP3 checks, CO bets $15, Button calls $15, BB calls $15, UTG+1 calls $15, Hero calls $15, MP3 calls $15.

Turn: ($169) [Tc] (6 players)
BB checks, UTG+1 checks, Hero checks, MP3 checks, CO bets $50, Button folds, BB folds, UTG+1 goes all in $160, Hero calls all in $160, MP3 folds, CO folds.

Final Pot: $219

Whether you like it or not, if you get 5 callers after you raise AA, you have to be able to let it go, with almost any flop you are probably beaten.

Of course, this is easier said than done. I was eliminated in a Party tourney yesterday when in the first orbit I get AA, raise it strong but get 5 callers. Innocent flop T64, but I was lost to a set...

I think CO should have bet 1/2 to 2/3 pot on the flop, and let it go if he gets callers. Why did he bet $15 into a $79 pot? That was very weak, any draw will call you.

hero called $9 to see what was probably going to be $70 after 1 more caller. that's already pot odds for the flopped set.

that's actually an ok flop for AA against 5-players. i would've bet $50 hoping to at least buy the button so checking behind on the turn is an option. terrrrrrrrible spot though.

I actually don't like the pf call of the raise with so many other callers ONLY because you're figuring that you're up against at least a couple other PP's which could cause you to easily get stacked set over set. I like it with one other caller...but when you start getting 3 or more...just let it go and swear when quads flops :p

Just for curiosity's sake, did UTG+1 at least have TT or 22? Or was it a monkey push?

You definitely have to call with 33 there preflop. It's a dream situation.

I did make an error in the calculations but have now corrected it.

UTG+1 had TT.
