What's he calling me down with?

Postby Alchemist » Sun Oct 30, 2005 3:22 pm

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.50 BB (10 handed)

MP2 ($31)
MP3 ($10.75)
CO ($46.30)
Button ($47.75)
SB ($50.75)
BB ($78.65)
UTG ($60.15)
Hero ($87.85)
UTG+2 ($51.65)
MP1 ($39.45)

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with [Qs], [Qh].
1 fold, Hero raises to $2.25, 1 fold, MP1 calls $2.25, 6 folds.

Flop: ($5.25) [9h], [7c], [9c] (2 players)
Hero bets $5, MP1 calls $5.

Turn: ($15.25) [Jh] (2 players)
Hero bets $15, MP1 calls $15.

River: ($45.25) [6h] (2 players)
At this stage, I got $65 left and he has $17

I'm struggling to put him on a hand here, the obvious is JJ or 99. If he had those surely a push on the turn since the bet was $15 and he only has just over a min-raise left in his stack. Since he only called I'm figuring he's on a draw. I didn't know villain either, just been at the table for 7 hands, only seen him play 3 and he's not turned any cards over yet. Thanks for the help

I dunno what he has. Either a monster or a big draw.

Personally I'm not inclined to fire again on the turn without a read, because now you're pot committed.

So check-call the river in your line.

If he had more money I would check/call to try induce a bluff by a draw.

Since he is on the short stack and probably is a fish, I would fire again. He could have anything, and since you're gonna call any bet anyway, I would try to get value and not let him check behind with a pocket pair.

I was out walking and thought about my advice.
I was going to post a followup but Kenny fixed it first.

You should bet, because: you're calling any bet of his anyway so by checking you let him check behind with a weaker hand. When you're paying off any hand he has anyway, so bet now and make the weaker hands pay too.

The way you played it, he could have anything. You bet so strongly that even if he flopped a set or quads he is more than happy with your bets -- no need for him to raise. So you're stuck. I hate all the options on the river: chk/fold to an all-in, chk/call an all-in, and push -- they all stink.

I would bet just 1/3 to 1/2 of the pot on the turn. Not a lot of draws look likely. If he has a huge hand, I want to bet small enough so that he has to raise me if he wants to double up. At least give me half a chance to get away from it.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes, I've been guilty of overplaying some hands lately, did the same today when I ran AQ into a short stacks AK, but anyway, I fired again at the river and put him in. He called, of course.

He had AA
