2 hands from yesterday: Set / Two pairs vs. dangerous board

Postby MHFlush » Thu Oct 27, 2005 1:28 am

Two difficult hands from yesterday, NL50:

Hand 1:

2 MP limper in front of me , I call in the CO with [Ks] [Qs], button calls, BB checks.

Flop: [3s] [4d] [Kd] Pot: 2.50$

BB checks, 1. MP limper bets 1.50$, 2.MP limper folds, I raise to 4.50$, only 1.MP limper calls. We both have full stacks.

Turn: [Qd] Pot: 11.50$

1.MP limper bets 7.50$, I call.

River: [7d]

He checks, I check, he wins with [Td] [8d]

Preflop and flop I think everything is okay. What about the turn? Correct call? I have top two pair vs. a possible flush. River: Should I have bluffed?
Hand 2:

I raise 2$ in early MP with [Tc][Th], only LP calls. We both have full stacks.

Flop: [8c][Ts][9s]

I bet 3$, he calls.

Turn:[Jd]

I check, he bets 10$, I fold.

Too weak-tight? Never fold a set? I could call his pot-sized bet and hope for my full house on the river. Comments?

Hand 1.
I would raise the flop more to around $6-$7 and try to push out any draws. Here you're giving him pretty much correct odds to call. Then if he still calls try and get it to showdown as cheap as possible. The 4th diamond killed his action or he would have bet again.

Hand 2.
I lead out on the turn for about 2/3 pot and let him tell me what he has. By check folding, you don't really know if he hit a straight or is still drawing to the flush or even has an underset to yours. He could just have smelled weakness and bluffed you out. Depends on your read.

1) i agree the raise should be a little bit bigger, mainly to charge a potential draw in the bb. i would also call on the turn and check the river. not really keen on pulling moves on the avg $50 player.

2) i'm not folding. the J is sort of a pseudo-scare card. i would probably call and 'see what happens'. i don't mind the turn check b/c betting out strong, although it gives you info, is basically going to pot commit you when you don't want to get raised; checking also gives you some bluff (or AJ/two pair) equity. on the river you could throw out a value/blocking bet to represent a Q if you don't hit. tough hand to play out of position.
