PFR facing low-mid Board Pair: scary or blessing?

Postby snok » Mon Oct 24, 2005 4:37 am

What’s your thinking when you are PFR and the flop comes with a low-mid board pair.
Is it scary or a minor blessing!?

You are PFR, and bet the flop. If you get reraised or called – how much do you worry about the board pair?

Situations:

You open with KK or AK and flop comes J77. You lead out and get called – what do you do on turn? Or you get reraised – what then?

And if you open with AK and flop K77, and you meet resistance. What then?
(Here most of the possible resisting hands would include a 7, I’d think.)

Also, if the board is connected AND paired like 776 - what do you think in this situation?

When facing a board pair and I meet resistance as PFR, I usually don’t give an unknown opponent credit for trips. In fact I feel more comfortable with an overpair to a paired board like J77 than to a J75 board when I meet resistance. And I worry even less when I see a board like J44. The reason is that I myself seldom call raises with SC’s or other non-pair hands, and the risk of quads I think is very minor.

Any educated thoughts on the above?

Cheers,
Snok

I should clarify a little.

WHen I open, I bet enuf to most often limit the field to 1-2 callers maximum.
And I very rarely call a strong opening bet PF with less than a PP or AK IF I'm first in.
But if there is one or more callers already in the pot, I'll gladly call or even reraise with a SC (I'll call if it's 3-way, I always Reraise both OOP and in pos if more than 1 caller).

And reasoning that my opponents play like me (As a first order approximation), I don't respect the caller HU since he is unlikely to have trips (not calling with a SC), but I'll worry a lot if an overcaller gets stubborn or aggressive.

I only worry about the 44-22 pairs when I play total suckers (A2s calls preflop etc).

Anybody out there with thoughts on paired boards?

If I have AK and the flop is K77, I'm not worried about the 7. I'm more concerned on flops like K54 where there is a potentional draw and 55/44 are annihilating me.

Of course every situation depends on the opponent.
