A9s on the button. How'd I play this?

Postby LuparFiend » Mon Oct 24, 2005 8:43 am

Absolute .10/.25 NL ($50 max buyin)

About the 15th hand I've played at this table. I haven't been involved in too many hands. And niether has villain. He hasn't shown down any hands yet, and only won a small pot a few hands earlier. The only time he raised in the last 15 hands, he had one caller, then all low cards on the flop, and then he slowed down and checked it to the end, and lost to a pair of 4s. I am assuming he had AK, or AQ.

Stage #211345970: Holdem No Limit $0.10 - 2005-10-24 08:59:42 (ET)
Table: HILDRETH LN (Real Money) Seat #1 is the dealer
Seat 1 - HERO ($48.70 in chips)
Seat 2 - sb ($13.38 in chips)
Seat 3 - bb ($50 in chips)
Seat 5 - utg ($25.31 in chips)
Seat 6 - VILLAIN ($44.60 in chips)
Seat 7 - mp1 ($60.70 in chips)
Seat 8 - lp ($49.75 in chips)
Seat 9 - co ($6.65 in chips)
sb - Posts small blind $0.10
bb - Posts big blind $0.25
*** POCKET CARDS ***
Dealt to HERO [9d] [Ad]
utg - Folds
VILLAIN - Raises $1 to $1
mp1 - Folds
lp - Folds
co - Folds
HERO - Calls $1
sb - Folds
bb - Folds

I was on the button, and I figured I'd play A9s from the button

*** FLOP *** [8c] [9h] [5s] (Pot =$2.35)
VILLAIN - Bets $1.50
HERO - Raises $4 to $4
VILLAIN - Calls $2.50

I hit TPTK. I re-raised to get information. His call confused me. I'm having trouble puttin him on a hand.

*** TURN *** [8c 9h 5s] [As] (pot = $10.35)
VILLAIN - Bets $2.75
HERO - Raises $9 to $9
VILLAIN - Calls $6.25

I hit top two pair. I'm liking my hand. I'm only behind trips. He bets only 1/4 pot, so I'm thinking this indicates weakness. I re-raise again, and he calls again.

*** RIVER *** [8c 9h 5s As] [Jd] (pot = $28.35)
VILLAIN - Checks
HERO - Bets $8.25
VILLAIN - All-In(Raise) $30.60 to $30.60

I throw out a value bet here of about 1/3 pot. He re-raises all-in. It costs me $22.35 to win a pot of $67.20. 3:1 odds.

I have to call here, right?

Results to follow.

Well, I think i fold A9 preflop. You are dominated by basically every Ace that is going to raise. A9 is not a hand to play for a raise. After ur flop raise gets called i put him on an overpair.AA-JJ. So when the J and the A come i deffinaley geet a lil worried. Espeially since he keeps calling you. Well, at 3:1 I guess call, but i really think u are behind to a set. At worst, maybe and i mean maybe a monkey with AJ.

The only time i would play A9 for a raise is if there is already like 4-5 people that have called the raise and i can assure myself of as big multiway pot.

HERO - Calls $22.35
*** SHOW DOWN ***
VILLAIN - Shows [6d 6c] (One pair, sixes)
HERO - Shows [9d Ad] (Two Pairs, aces and nines)
HERO Collects $86.55 from main pot
*** SUMMARY ***
Total Pot($89.55) | Rake ($3)
Board [8c 9h 5s As Jd]

I called and he showed a pair of sixes!!?!?! He did have an inside straight draw. *rolls eyes*

I probably should have folded preflop, but I like the result. I'll have to make sure and add villain to my donk list I guess.

i would've called as well. overall his play was very confusing. AA is mathematically very unlikely, and i would expect a typical player to reraise that on the flop. 99 or 88 and i don't see many ppl raise those from ep. JJ just doesn't make sense either. AJ is really the only hand i would worry about, but getting 3:1, good call.

yeah and i have to echo that calling raises w/ A9s is going to get you in trouble.

Wow, [6d][6c]!! Thats nuts!! Make sure u make a note on this guy. Good thing you did call at 3:1. Its one of those "I don't like it, but i gotta" calls. Thats a nice pot to take down. i would deffinatley though make some notes on this guys who made the big bluff on the end.

Its just A9 is so easily donminated u can never really fee; safe about ur hand. If the flop comes 9 high, you have TP/TK but the PFR could easily havwe an overpair, and if you flop an Ace you have some kicker issues. It is enough to make ur head spin..Ughh!! You just never know really where u are.

Leyneqt, you are very correct when u say AA is unlilkey I totally agree. I really though the guys play here echoed an overpair. I guess I am wrong, but i was shocked to see 66!!LOL Its just I play $25NL and i so often see guys play an overpair so passivley just bet and call, and wait till the river to pump it up. I did was refering a set to as AAA or JJJ. I am sorry that I should have been more percise and agree thatnot to many people aer egoing to raise in EP with 88, or 99. Sorry for the confusion!!
