First big NL hand

Postby stickdude » Wed Oct 19, 2005 11:15 pm

I've been playing exclusively at the Party Beginner $.15/$.30 tables for the last week, and wanted to try out NL at their beginner tables while I still could. So, I loaded up at the NL$5 table, spent a long time getting absolutely nothing, and then got this:

Party Poker No-Limit Hold'em, $ BB (9 handed)

Hero ($2.83)
SB ($7.20)
BB ($17.94)
UTG ($0)
UTG+1 ($4.34)
MP1 ($3.61)
MP2 ($29.02)
MP3 ($6.65)
CO ($4.29)

Preflop: Hero is Button with [8c], [Ac]. SB posts a blind of $0.02.
UTG+1 calls $0.04, 1 fold, MP2 calls $0.04, 2 folds, Hero calls $0.04, SB (poster) completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($0.20) [5c], [Kd], [Kc] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero checks.

Turn: ($0.20) [3c] (6 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG+1 checks, MP2 checks, Hero bets $1, SB folds, BB folds, UTG+1 calls $1, MP2 calls $1.

River: ($3.20) [2s] (4 players)
UTG+1 checks, MP2 bets $2, Hero calls $1.79 (All-In), UTG+1 calls $2.

Final Pot: $8.99

First time going all-in, and I lived to tell about it. :D

Stickdude be very carefull at this level chasing flush's on a paired board. People really love to slowplay their monsters. My guess is that the all in player had a dry king and you sucked out on him after he slowplayed it. As paired boards go this is a pretty safe board since there isnt another boardway cards to make a boat and there guys werent in the blinds so K3, K5, or K2 seem unlikely. Congrads on your first good pot.

you bet $1 into a .20 pot and got 2 calls? No, i'm not really surprised as I do this all the time messing around on ght 10nl on pacific. However, don't get into these habits of vastly overbetting the pot. Also, be careful drawing on a paired board. One, if not both have the king but its unlikely they boated up but always possible. I don't drop against low level yahoos but as you move up, keep that in mind too.

It was definitely a different experience than playing limit. It didn't feel like I was playing more hands than I normally do in limit, but then I look at PT after the session and my VP$P was higher than it has been in limit. On the other hand, there were only 6 hands out of 94 where I went to a showdown, and this hand was the only one that I won the showdown. I did win a few other pots without a showdown - like the one time I got pocket aces.

I think what was happening was that there was very little pre-flop raising, so I was getting to see a lot of flops cheaply, and then when I missed the flop, I'd fold, as there was more raising after the flop. Even with the hands where I lost the showdown, I still got to the showdown pretty cheaply - the primary exception was when my trip-6's lost to a flush.

But, it was enough to cure my NL "bug" for a while. It's back to the limit grind for me. :)
