Should I have bet this river?

Postby LuparFiend » Fri Oct 14, 2005 7:53 am

Tell me how bad I played this hand. Argggg.

I don't have much of a read on this guy. I've only seen him for the past 10 hands or so. He got someone stack when he won set over set with a set of K's.

If you are going to bet the turn, make sure its a bigger bet because:

1) Betting 2 into $6 pot screams, "I'm on a draw, please just don't raise this." A good player would bet the river into you once the draw missed knowing it would be hard for you to call.

2) You want to build a pot in case you hit your draw. If you hit your flush and then suddenly start betting big, most people will fold. To win a big pot, build one.

3) Your opponent might fold a weak hand. 44 probably folds to a 5 bet here.

this is a huge flop for you. time for a classic semi-bluff. make a pot-sized bet on the flop and then re-evaluate on the turn (i would probably just take the free card).

the problem is, you made small bets w/ questionable fold equity (the flop bet isn't technically that small, but it needs to be higher at these stakes) and opponent happily called in case you have AK. if you're going to bet, you might as well bet enough so that they can fold. think about it this way, if you just bundle the flop and turn bet together into one big flop bet (and let's just say you default check the turn if called), your results here will be much better.

i would not bet the river b/c your play looks too much like AK, QJ just got there, and if he has a busted flush draw, you're probably going to win anyway.

When you have a draw like that, try to get money in the pot. With any nut flush draw, I bet pot on the flop, and 1/2-3/4 pot on the turn a lot of times. It's a semibluff, you want to win the pot right there a lot of times, and win big when you hit. More aggression with good draws.
