You get Axo in the BB. Multiple limpers, you check.

Flop comes xxy, where x is the card in your hand (you have trips), and y is some card less than ten. No flush draw, no straight draw.

You pot the flop. One opponent calls - he has a full stack, just like you. Turn is some card, you pot the turn, he raises pot. What do you do?

I've come across this situation a lot lately, with mixed results. I'm curious to hear how others would play this.

Some things to consider -

1) Does it matter how high x is? Is 99y all that different from 44y?

2) Should you be willing to go all the way with this against an average opponent, as he will have 9x enough times to make it worthwhile? Or is this foldable?

3) Does it matter how high y is? Is xxT different than xx3?

1) It matters more, how high the other card is. Assuming the guy isnt a moron, hes either going to have trips, the same as you, or have a boat. If the flop is 44Q, then theres very little chance that he has QQ since he didnt raise preflop. So he will almost always have a 4 and of course you have TK.

2) Alot of the time, yes. But if the flop is 446, then theres much better chance that he has 66, since most people dont play hands with 4s in them.

If the flop was TT4, I would be much more willing to go all the way because theres a good chance he has a T and that should more than make up for the times he has 44.

I agree with ice that the size of the trips makes a big deal to what the other guy can have. Also, I like to try to mix up my play but trying to check raise the turn, especially if there are no obvious draws. He will more likely bet out the turn and you can make him pay.

To me a big consideration is whether the x is higher than the y. I much prefer A8 on a 488 flop than a T88 flop because the times I am against the boat I am drawing to one out instead of 4. I don't think I have ever folded trips with TK without an obvious flush or str8 out, but I would if I knew my opponent to be very tight. At the levels I play the vast majority is always willing to go all the way with trips worse kicker.

i think in general.....when X is low and Y is relatively high...you're in good shape. when X is low and CONNECTS with Y....you're very possibly screwed by someone who limped in with SC's/small pair and hit a boat. whereas when Y is high....you get to screw someone who limped in w/ SC's and hit trips.

so the main question for me is "would a common limping hand have hit this harder than i have"? it also depends a lot on my reads. if an opponent is very tight...i'll understand that they're primarily limping w/ PP's more than SC's, and might lay it down. if the opponent is looser and more aggressive...im quite willing to get all-in, because he probably has trips too and i have him severely outkicked.

lately I lost a lot of these , I remember like last week I was up 100 at 25nl, and ended up -30 , loosing about 4 times with trips outkiked , trips to full, whatever you name it and I lost it and all in one session
but i like to think that if I loos 4-5 of these than the next 15 of them I'll win,
Most of the time you will not get too much action and if you get it there's a good chance you will loose the hand unless the oponent is pushing some stupid hand
I tend to be carefull lately with trips especially after getting loosing a fewof these but I will not stop betting and hoping for the best
