Good read bad play?

Postby AlamdeaMike » Sat Oct 08, 2005 9:37 am

NL200 - Live game. I had just sat down and got my stack to $540 with a nut flush. I am in the BB $3 and feeling my oats. MP player (about 35, looks like he knows how to play the game well - he has about $600) makes it $15 to go and 2 callers between he and I so I call.

I have [Qd] [Jd] - a marginal hand but hand that has potential.

Flop $56 [Kh] [Qh] [Qs]

Not too bad, unless he had KK, KQ or AQ I am way ahead.

I decide to find out and bet out $60. He calls. That is not a good sign at all. He strikes me as a solid player would not call with a flush draw so that means he most likely has one of the 3 hands mentioned. I rule out KQ on general principle.

Turn $176 [4h]

Now if he was on a flush draw he got there so just in case I check and he checks.

River $176 [Jh] Worst card in the world for me. Now I have a full house. If he had [Ah] [Qc] then I have him cold if not I could lose some chips.

I decide to bet $60 and see what happens. He counts out some chips like he is going to make a big raise ...

I think to myself What if he pushes? Is my FH good? Should I push? Can I fold?

and then he makes it $120.

Damn - The pot is $296 and all I need to do is call $60 (almost 5:1) just to see if I have the best hand. I can not fold this.

I call.

What hand do you think he had? Do you think my play was okay? Was my river bet a good idea? Check and call or check and fold? When he re-raised me I figured he must have a full house.

White - he had kings, of course - sometimes I hate this evil game

Here is a link that is on topic. Thanks

Aside - Many of you have been kind enough to read my hand postings and make comments. I appriciate this.

You might notice a trend here. I seem to get into a lot of trouble when playing NL. I think it comes from one of many things. One is I play marginal hands that get me in trouble. I am trying to stop this. I do not play well enough after the flop so I need to tighten up preflop.

If I had just folded his hand like I should have then I would not have had to make the tough decisions in the first place. I might make less money but I might save some money as well.

After this hand I started playing weak tight and blead off $200 and left. No heart left to play.

later he and I were talking and he was surprised that I did not go allin.
