Let the aggr player bluff

Postby poker2006 » Wed Oct 05, 2005 3:44 pm

This is a nice hand I played yesterday, and I think it shows how to play against an aggressive player when you hit something. He's trying to get you our of the hand, and raising at any point would make him fold. Sometimes you just have to let him bet all the way.

Background on this hand, I have been raising a LOT in CO, BUT positions, and opponents are getting upset with that.

Hero is dealt [Th][Td] on the button.
UTG+1 limps, MP2 limps, Hero raises $4.5, UTG+1 calls, MP2 folds.

Flop (pot $11.50): [Ks][Ts][Tc]
UTG+1 checks, Hero bets $5, UTG+1 raises $20, Hero calls.

Turn (pot $51.50): [8d]
UTG+1 bets $30, Hero calls.

River (pot $111.50): [4d]
UTG+1 bets $54.65 (all-in), Hero calls.

Result.
UTG+1 shows [Ad][3d], pair of tens
Hero shows [Th][Td], four of a kind tens
Hero wins $217.80.
UTG+1 left the table.

Gotta disagree with gdaviet. You have to bet that flop. Not betting it after PF raising would set off alarms. Bet it half pot like that to show some weakness. Beautiful.

Well, just to be contrary:

Do you change the size of your flop bet? Ever? What would you bet with top pair, or top full-house?

I bet them all the same.

In general, you're only real hope of winning money with a huge hand like is for someone to catch up somehow (maybe a backdoor flush or straight, or runner runer full-house), or to have someone run a bluff at you.

In the first case, you need them to see all the cards, so betting any amount of the flop is likely to chase them away. If they are calling half-pot bets with a draw on a paired board, you don't need to maximize this rare occurance to make a ton of money off of them. Let them hit their draw for free and hope they are stuck.

The bluff runner - the guy who will check-raise a paired board on a bluff, then bet all his chips to the river with nothing ... well, you didn't need to bet that flop to get all his money. He's likely to start betting at you anyway. And you don't even need a hand ... heck, a pair of 2's would have been fine. It is the rare player (rare because they go broke so quick) that will check-raise on a bluf, then keep pushing after they are called.

I'm very aggressive, and almost never call on any street ... however, I've been very effective at getting all the money in with monster hands (quads or better) by simply becoming passive.

If they are smart enough to figure out you have Quads because you checked the flop, then you aren't going to be getting any money from them with a bet either.

I definetely bet the flop. Hopefully he has a K or some PP and plays back at me. Check/calling all the way after you get action is ok but I think it's better to bet that flop than to check it. When a ultra-aggro player suddenly checks after raising preflop, alarm bells go off in MY head, I assume I am not the only one. Also, not only will he not put you on quads (because veryone slwoplays them) but you're (hopefully) semibluffing and betting marginal hands a lot, this is one of the reasons, to get action on your monsters.

the point is hero has been aggressive and opponents are getting testy; they are expecting you to bet here. i like the dinky bet. the flop is [Ks][Ts][Tc], which is an action flop. there are a number of hands that an aggressive opponent can give you action with; plus the T is a card he can and did try to represent.

if the flop is [Ts][Tc][4h], i would check. but on the flop in question, i like the bet.
