Winning from the blinds - how is it done?

Postby snok » Thu Oct 06, 2005 10:08 am

I've just realized that when I play at some of my usual passive tables, I sometimes end up playing as many as 1/3 of all the flops I take from the blinds. I play mostly 20$ and some 50$.

I kid you not! My recent stats are roughly, VPIP 19 (30 fom the SB), PFR 4.6

It seems my stats are pretty normal, so I guess most players actually play a really significant number of hands from the blinds.

What's the key to making a profit from the Small blind in unraised pots? I pretty much break even. But since I play such a large fraction of all my hands from there, I wonder if there's anything "magical" to do about it!?

I only complete in SB with decent potential hands, and tend to play rather conservative.

I flop a lot of straight draws, sometimes I bet my draws, more often I check/fold or check/call depending on the odds. I raraely check-reraise; perhaps that would be a good line?

Didn't find any threads detailing other players approach, but if there is - please post the link!

thanks,
Snok

I have the same questions, and few of the answers.

I hate hate hate check-raising from a blind with a draw, because if I'm called on the flop (which ALWAYS happens, nobody knows how to fold) and then a blank hits on the turn, I have no clue what to do. It's a gross situation.

My VPIP is also about 30 from the SB, but those are all unraised pots. I need a real hand to call from the SB against any raise, even a minraise.

It's all about pot odds: if there are 3 limpers, then I'm getting 9-1 odds on my complete of the SB (3 limpers + the BB + my half bet already in the middle). Given those initial odds, I am perfectly fine with check/folding the flop 8 times out of 9!

My advice, fwiw, is wait until you get a really solid hand or a cheap draw before playing beyond the flop from the SB.
