How do you play against this guys raises?

Postby mecha » Tue Oct 04, 2005 4:32 pm

This is a fairly standard aggressive villan.

Villan:
His PFR is 8%.
His VPIP is 18%.
WTSD 18%
WSD 47%
Sample Size: 2000

He likes to miniraise preflop as well as make full size pot preflop bets. Most of the time he will make almost full size pot continuation bets. He goes to showdown with good hands as well as marginal ones.

I feel like i'm losing a lot to this guy waiting for sets. Should I even bother calling this guy for set value? Seems like I would be losing money doing this. I should only call with high pairs, and high suited cards. Essentially the higher the PFR the less likely you should be calling pairs for set value. Thoughts?

This guy raises about 1/2 of his hands. Basically, he's raising premium hands since he's not playing to many hands.

Definitely call for a set. He's probably raising KQ. If you have 55 and the flop is KJ5, you crush him as it seems he's used to forcing out people by your description.

I think you have to look at PFR with VPIP. A guy with a 10% PFR might not really be raising all that much if his VPIP is 55%.

I agree with tr. With position, I'd in fact call that mini-raise with almost any good solid hand: Suited connectors (which also hit rarely), but also KQ, AJ, AQ.

Against the mini-raise, the pot should also frequently be a little bit multi-way, and he's pricing you in really pretty cheap. I'd just view it as a slightly glorified limp and tighten up just a tiny bit in calling, but not much.

I have no problem with making a continuation bet against these types of guys. Most will fold when they see resistance.

He's not a total maniac because his VPIP is low. He just front loads his aggression. These types will fold to pressure.
