top set on flushed board

Postby ua1176 » Tue Sep 27, 2005 1:16 pm

$50NL @ Prima

UTG+1 ($58) limps. Hero ($54) raises to $2 from MP1 w/ [Jh][Jc]. Button calls, UTG+1 limper calls.

flop: [4d][7s][Js]
pot: $6.75

UTG+1 leads for $3. i ponder how nice it would be for him to have a lower set. i call his $3 bet. Button folds.

turn: [As]
pot size: $12.75

UTG+1 leads for $3.50. i raise to $8...he re-raises to $17.

so....does he have the flush? or a lower set? or AJ? should i push in right here or smooth call and hope the river pairs the board? i'd never played with him before and he'd just sat down at the table, so no reads.

thanks

Call and hope the board pairs.

It's good to have position here.

If the board pairs and he has the flush, he won't be good enough to lay it down to your all-in.
If the board doesn't pair, you can call a reasonable bet.

sounds about right to me. You're getting a little over 4-1 on the call, with implied odds you'll make more then enough to cover if the board pairs on the river.

Raise the flop and you wont have to ponder long whether or not he has a set. I think its highly unlikely though.

I also dont think he has a flush, but you wont get much more out him if he doesnt. Dont reraise. Call and call most any river bet unless another spade hits.

It's good to start putting notes on people that can semi bluff the flop on a flush draw...not many people actually do it at that level, so I'd be more inclined to think that you're way ahead here (unlikely to have AA), possibly facing two pair, or even a smaller set.

I think that u have to raise the flop here. There is a flush draw out and this is not the time to slowplay a set. U really have to protect urself from another spade falling. Now on the turn, I would not have riased at all. I would have just called and hoped that the board paired.

Yeah, I think it's really unavoidable here to raise on the flop to something like $10. Otherwise, you let his weak bet get you in trouble with the milking attempt.

What can he really have here? Well, if it's a lower set, you miss the opportunity to stack him by not raising right now, while the situation is clear. If it's by some coincidence AJ or KJ, he should probably call.

Ok, if he has 8d7d, then he folds to the raise, but is he putting any more in there anyway?

I tend to agree that the majority of players don't know to semi-bluff their draws, but 65 and any spade draw are genuine dangers. They're also not going to fold if you raise to $10.

These flat calls, while tempting, are usually mistakes imo (exception: against a know LAG who is going to get all of his chips in with or without a hand). If they have nothing, you can't really even milk it. No more money is going in anyway. If they have something, they're not going away that quickly and need to pay if they have a hand that can outdraw you.

I like to call with a set on the flop when he makes a close to pot size bet, showing real strength. That way I expect another bet on the flop, when I can raise it. If he makes a small bet on the flop, with possible draws out there, I prefer a raise.

I think it's possible he has the flush. I would still call a 1/3 bet on the river, so I can take notes on him.
