Check/folding my set in a raised pot

Postby Stoneburg » Sun Sep 25, 2005 11:35 pm

Limper has $28, raiser has a full buy in. Raiser seems tight but I only have 20 or so hands.

Valkrie99 called - $0.50
Jeffm351 folded
MissMuffet folded
DoThaFunk raised - $2.00
peterga folded
OICURMT folded
Busto folded
Stoneburg called - $2.00 [2d] [2s]
laddy folded
banshee75 folded
Valkrie99 called - $2.00

** Dealing the flop: [2h] [7h] [As] $6.75
Valkrie99 checked
DoThaFunk checked
Stoneburg checked

** Dealing the turn: [3s] $6.75
Valkrie99 bet - $2.00
DoThaFunk raised - $8.00
Stoneburg folded

I have never before folded a set like this before. Did I do the right thing or have I been smoking crack?

I hope he showed down AA to you, but I don't like the laydown. IMO if you can't get your money in after you call a raise preflop and hit a set, then you aren't playing your set strongly enough.

i dont think you need to fear the raiser. but i might be afraid of the other caller leading the turn. still. i probably re-raise and if im beat, i'll deal with it.

Bet $4-6 on the flop and much of your woe disappears and you can build a pot that you feel better about losing if you get stacked.

I would DEFINITELY lead out on the flop... 2 hearts, semi-straight draw... I lead, hope AK plays along and I get to stack him.. If he has AA there, I'm gonna probably end up givin him all my money anyway...

IMO just like Pish, the only reason why somebody calls preflop 22 is to hit a set, and you did....

once you hit , i think with those cards on the board you gotta bet pot ( or a bit more ) on the flop. ok, you decided to check... if he is tight he is not holding 4/5 and raising preflop, so you are beat by 3 hands , and i don't think he has 33 or 77 so the only one is AA, so... my choice is reraise, i don't think if anyone else thinks like me , but that my 2 cents.

Alex.

I'm going to go ahead and guess he showed down KK or QQ, if it went to showdown.

Ok maybe we can pust aside the more knee-jerk reactions. I know why I'm playing 22 to a raise and as I stated in my original post, this is the first time I have ever felt the correct move is to fold. This is about this very specific hand not how to play sets in general, because in general, I don't fold sets unless there's an obvious straight or flush out, and barely then.

I'm not that worried about the BB leading on the turn, that could be anything. I'm worried about a tight player that raises preflop, then checks when an Ace flops but raises on the turn when someone else bets into him. What sort of hand would he do that with?

The BB folded to the raise by the way.
