Open-min-raising instead of limping: where's the downside?!

Postby Smokin'Al » Sat Sep 17, 2005 3:07 pm

So, in the last couple of days I've started experimenting with open min-raising where I would normally limp in EP. (Mainly 2/4 NL 6 max).

The rationale is...

(1) I mess up the statistics for people using PT/GT against me. Also people not paying attention, who'll think I must have a big hand when I raise 4-5BB.

(2) In games where you have people raising pre-flop 10% of the time (this certainly applies to all 6 max, and 2/4 ring), quite often you limp with something tasty like 67s, only for some bully behind you to raise 3-4BB with A2o or something. Most irritating.

(3) I'm not giving any information away (or any more than I would be by limping).

(4) I build the pot with implied odds hands.

(5) Sometimes I'll steal the blinds.

(6) People may think I'm more of an idiot than I actually am.

(7) Hopefully it will massively irritate everyone :)

Thoughts? What's the downside? How would people counter this strategy (now that I've err posted it on a public forum, hmm)

2) If you keep min raising, Im much more likely to reraise you with anything at all if I think I can get it heads up. Ive done this to quite a few people. They almost always fold and when they dont I almost always bet the flop and take it down because they have nothing. They find out real quick, that constant min raising will be expensive and they usually stop it.

The only way to counter me doing this is for you to also min raise with your big pairs, but the problem with that is that if I dont reraise you, you will get more callers than you want and your big pair can easly get cracked.

Your strategy may work all right if people keep calling you, because then you just play the hand normally and its just like you were playing a 50BB max buy in game like Party used to be. But if people keep reraising you like I will be doing (and like Ive encouraged other people to do when this has happened at my table), then your strategy will not work.

How much do you reraise to? 6BB? Sounds quite risky to me, though I guess you've not had any problems.

I kinda like that PT will make you appear like a maniac, but otherwise it's probably pointless. If you normally limp there, it's probably cause you want to see a cheap flop and/or see what other players behind you will do. This way you may cause players with AQ/AK/JJ to just limp and you got no info at all. Not that it's bad or something. Just pointless. :)
