Ok, it's not in modern times, with no electricity, so I think we can rule out any time since 1900. They were in a panic. Eating a common meal. Running away from something.

My guess is they live in Italy, somewhere close to Mt. Vesuvius and it just erupted. They don't run out of the house, but not to a specific room either, therefore I say they got buried in volcanic ash. The common meal they were eating? Antipasto, since Marco Polo hasn't brought pasta back from China yet.
