SG - why I play them

Postby AlamedaMike » Mon Aug 29, 2005 11:54 am

This is why I sometimes play suited one gap cards. Long term they are losers but sometimes they pay off nicely if you get lucky. They are better played at limit rather than no-limit.

This player was nice enough to give me $41.

I flopped an inside str8 draw and a runner flush - maybe 5 outs. I did not have the pot odds to call - I was hoping to hit my str8 and get paid off - implided odds.

Samfarha19 bets $7, AlamedaMike calls $7

*** TURN *** [9d] [6c] [4h] [5s]

The Turn did not change anything. I think he hit is hand and wanted to Check Raise me so he checked. Had he bet I would have folded. Thanks for the free draw. never give a player on a draw a free card.

Samfarha19 checks, AlamedaMike checks

*** RIVER *** [9d] [6c] [4h] [5s] [7h]

Nice hit. My inside str8 hit.

Samfarha19 bets $28, AlamedaMike raises to $56

I raised too much with the nuts. I was hoping that he had an EIGHT and would call me.

Samfarha19 folds

AlamedaMike wins the pot ($81)

This is a hand that Doyle might play if the stacks were big. I flopped a double belly buster and a flush draw. I had a 56% chance to win on the flop.

They are fun to play once in awhile, but, I think that they are losers. I like to mix up my play and I don't want to get bored. Not a good reason.

I say that they are long term losers because I do not recommend that any one play them because I sometimes do.

I lost $6 on one hand and won $41 on the other. I feel that you can not always just play the premium hands.

In live games I see a lof of players getting good action when they play a mixture of hands.

 Forgot that was the minimum raise. Thanks

They are one of the hands you can add into your arsenal if you play well post flop or are trying to learn to play well post flop. They are especially valuable to play in loose passive games where you can often either see the next two cards for weak bets and pound when you hit, or pay one price at the flop and with position see the next two cards for free.

Hand number 1. I consider a gutshot and runner runner flush to be a playable hand at times. Set the price you wish to pay at the flop and be disciplined enough to fold it it. If there are callers in between taking one off the top too, know what you want to see at the turn to continue. Depending on your opponents this loose passive style of play can be profitable if they let you draw for cheap...

Hand number 2. You are about 60/40 to complete your draw at the turn, if I recall correctly. If the straight hits and he actually holds something you are in great shape, if the flush hits you might or might not get paid. I would suggest betting the price you want to pay for the river, if he raises a min amount you will still have great odds to draw.

Suited one gappers are great hands as they are really sneaky... holding the nuts with 68s or 79s is really well disguised. I don't really see the difference between a 78s and a 86s, as you are going to play them the same, only one the board will look less coordinated when you make a straight with the one gapper.

Thanks Dale -

Hand #2 was well hidden for the str8 but he did not have enough chips for me to continue. If the str8 hit I might get more of his chips but I think he would fold if the flush card hit unless he could beat me so I folded.

If I had bet say $10 on the Turn and he just called then that would be okay. I would be getting 1:3.5 pot odds for a 34% to win.

But, the $15 was too much. I had exactly 15 outs and the pot odds were 15/44 - which was perfect. But, he would fold if the flush hit so my implied odds were for the Str8 only.

It was a toss up for fold or call. Fold -6, call $30 x 9 and $60 (maybe) x 6 and -$15 x 29.

So what is the EV someone? I lose $450 for 30 and win $450 15 times. If make the str8 I make more.

How do you make out with your suited gappers?
