1/2 scary spot on a flopped set

Postby Stelvask » Sun Aug 28, 2005 1:27 am

opponent is unknown, i've never played wtih him before.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $2 BB (9 handed)

SB ($205.40)
BB ($89.30)
UTG ($50)
UTG+1 ($323.25)
MP1 ($116)
MP2 ($323.45)
MP3 ($50.25)
Hero ($197)
Button ($143)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [3h], [3d]. UTG posts a blind of $2.
UTG (poster) checks, 4 folds, Hero calls $2, 1 fold, SB completes, BB checks.

Flop: ($8) [6s], [Ac], [3s] (4 players)
SB checks, BB checks, UTG bets $2, Hero raises to $6, SB calls $6, BB folds, UTG folds.

Turn: ($22) [Ah] (2 players)
SB bets $8, Hero raises to $24, SB raises to $56, Hero ??????????

/edit NO comments about my flop raise. it's was 12:30 on saturday night and i misclicked, that raise was supposed to be to $10, not $6. i'm not sure how i pulled that off, but it's somewhat irrellevant aside from how it limits my information (somewhat)

with two pair hes gonna reraise you in case you are betting on the come on the flop. if he was slow playing 2 pair thats fine just pay him off. plus you still have an out

the ace shouldn't scare you it should make you very happy. most opponents cannot get away from three aces and you are very soon to double up here.

without any read this is how i would try to double up:
reraise to 100
push on the river

Your trailing AA (unlikely), A6, 66, and A3(very unlikely).

You beat everything else into a nice shinny pulp. I'm pushing.

my thought process at the time was similar to both of yours, but in talking with MadGenius after the hand he made a valid point.

This is an unraised pot with bottom set, and i've made it crystal clear on both the flop and the turn that i like my hand, and he's continuing to play back at me.

So here's my question for both of you (and anyone else). what hand do you put him on?

i think 66 is quite a possibility. A6, too, if he's one of those players who plays 70% VP$IP from the SB. but he could also have some sort of AJ/AT type hand and be overplaying it.

tough to say...against a good, tough player, there's a good chance you're behind to 66. but he could just have an Ace.

I think he might well have Ax [s] He went from having top pair fair kicker with nut flush draw to trips with nut flush and boat redraw.

Granted he could have A6, 66 or even AA but the only reason I'm smoooth calling here is to get all the money in on the river. The pot is about $75ish if I recall correctly and you both have about a full stack, if he leads for $50 to more on the non 6 or A river it makes it lucrative spot to push.

The reasons I don't think he has either 66 or A6 is because of the $2 lead at the flop. Unless he is overly passive, which you haven't stated, a player should bet more with the flush draw out there with either of those fragile hands.

I think that AQ and AJ are as likely as 66 in this spot. My guess would be 66 but I don't think I could make a laydown here. I just don't see how you can get away from this hand. I suppose you could just call and then call the river to try and save some cash but in the heat of battle I know I would have just pushed here.
