Flopped bottom set on a flush flop

Postby teknipper » Wed Aug 17, 2005 9:06 pm

I have been working on my Holdem skills and taking a little break from the Omaha 8 tables. I feel I have been getting better at these grey situations in Holdem, but wanted other opinions. I think that I played this hand pretty well regardless of the results.

Ultimate Bet No-Limit Hold'em, $.50 BB (9 handed)

UTG+1 ($8)
MP1 ($50.30)
TEKnipper ($78.95)
MP3 ($30.40)
CO ($29.85)
Button ($48.25)
SB ($23.25)
BB ($13.40)
UTG ($36.65)

Preflop: TEKnipper is MP2 with [3c], [3h].
2 folds, MP1 raises to $1.75, TEKnipper calls $1.75, 3 folds, SB calls $1.50, 1 fold.

MP1 has been very solid with a low V$IP and 0 PFR in 40 hands. I think he has AK, AA, KK, QQ or maybe JJ to raise. SB is a little looser but is still pretty solid from what I have seen (25 hands agaisnt him).

Flop: ($5.75) [3s], [Ts], [Js] (3 players)
SB checks, MP1 bets $5.75, TEKnipper calls $5.75, SB raises to $11.5, MP1 calls $5.75, TEKnipper calls $5.75.

OK, I do and don't like this flop. I just call in this situation thinking that I am ahead and want to see a clean turn (no spade) to push. When the SB reraises, I know that I am beat but I have boarderline odds ($6 into a $34 pot) to see the turn and position to see if the board pairs.

Turn: ($40.25) [2s] (3 players)
SB bets $10 (All-In), MP1 calls $10, TEKnipper calls $10.

I know that I am beat here not only by the SB but now by the MP1 as well. However, I am confident that if the board pairs that I will be ahead at the end. $10 into a $60 pot seems like a no brainer to me.

River: ($70.25) [8c] (3 players, 1 all-in)
MP1 bets $27.05 (All-In), TEKnipper folds.

Not much I can do here but fold.

Final Pot: $97.30

Results in white below:
SB has 9s As (flush, ace high).
MP1 has Ad Ks (flush, king high).
Outcome: MP1 wins $97.30.

I think the preflop call was correct in trying to catch a set to break someone's stack. Pair of 3s are pretty much a set it or forget situation for me. I think if I made a mistake in the hand, it was calling the reraise on the flop. However, it was a minimum reraise and it just seemed wrong to fold.

The only big mistake in this hand was by MP1, letting you call that small bet on the turn with a chance to catch your card and take the pot. IMO you have odds to make all the calls you made.

I have been very reluctant calling a rasie in MP with a low pair.

Nice play all the way. My set to flushes always seem to lose. But, once I flopped a set to a 3-suit and paired the board. He is still mad at me to this day (live game).
