2 tough 5/10 hands

Postby iceman5 » Sun Aug 14, 2005 5:18 pm

2 hands from the afternoon session

#1) Cutoff open raises the min to $20. He does this all the time , although I dont think Ive seen his cards. The very last time around he open min raised from button. SB reraised to $75. I called and min raiser folded.

So this time I reraised from the SB to $80 with A9. He called though.

Pot is $170. Flop comes ATT rainbow. I bet $80 and he called.
Pot is $330. Turn is a king.I bet $150 and he called. He has $300 left.
Pot is $630. The river is a 7. I check and he pushes. Who calls?

#2) UTG limps, fish in EP limps, I raise to $50 on the button with [8h][6h]. SB reraises the min to $95. Both limpers fold and I call. We both have full stacks

Pot is $220. The flop comes [8d][7h][4c]. Whats your plan? I have top pair, a gutshot and position

Hand #1 I call. Those sort of players will show Ax and something really stupid like a PP often enough to make the 3:1 odds good I think. This is however based on MICROSTAKES experience, not $1000!! I wouldn't have re-raised preflop from the SB though (unless it was FL).

Hand #2 I' going to assume JJ-AA or at best AK. What to do is totally read-dependent I think.

If he's tight/solid it's likely that I flat call a flop bet if he leads (to represent an overpair like JJ-QQ). If he's got QQ or KK he might slow down on turn in which case I will take a free card. I don't intend to try to push him off his overpair if he has one.

If he's LAGgy in I'll probably raise him. If he calls my raise I check behind on the turn if I miss and if I hit one of the 9 outs (+backdoor flush) that mean I beat an over-pair I'm going to try to stack him. If he re-raises me I fold obviously. Once again, I'm not going to try and push him off an over pair but show some aggression so that he slows down.

Might sound counter intuitive to call the tight player and raise the LAG but I think this is a good way to play it on the low stakes tables. I might mini-raise the tight one instead of calling though if he's not sensitive enough to not bet an OP all the way.

#1 I don't see any way out for the price as he has just called you down all the way, Although I would expect to see a better kicker A or the T about half the time a split 25% and dragging 25%.

#2 I mix up the way I play this. Sometimes I raise if SB leads, sometimes I smooth call and if he goes really ape I fold unless I know really ape is a 80% likely bluff bet in which case I like moving in if he can bluff and fold, if he can't fold, I still get very aggressive about 25% of the time.

Do you know what his continuation and bluff bets look like? This will make smooth calling or pumping up the pot and how hard easier.

If I've opted to start a loose aggressive play preflop I often follow thru with LAG on the flop when I pick up a big piece of the board. TP backdoor flush draw and a gutshot is massive hand for a raised up 86s I generally play pretty darned TAGish so my LAG plays have a greater chance of success. If you have been mixing it up and showing down your kooky hands 99-JJ is more likely to reraise preflop and less likely to fold post flop and I like slowing down until I do hit or get a good and scary card to bluff.

I reserve this sort of play until I'm tripled up or greater and trying to maximize with out direct variance instead of as a new stack play. On of my problems as bigger stack is getting good action unless I'm beat, and a few big plays like this wins whether I lose the pot or not as the table incorrectly will loosen up too much to me.
