monk, didn't more russians die in that war than all of the dead in all other wars combined... or something ridiculous like that?

i am certain that it is more than all of the non-russian dead in the two world wars. anyway, it's sick.... attrition war with human life s a warped theory.

I stand partially corrected on the Nazis vs Switzerland thing...i've heard too that there was Nazi gold kept there...
"If there was any tactical reason to invade Switzerland they would've done, and overthrown the country in a matter of days. A few guys with hunting rifles and cuckoo clocks would have had little chance against Panzer divisions and Stukas. "

I think the men in Switzerland would take issue with this...a handful of Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto held off the Nazis for a good while. And yes the Nazis i've heard really got bogged down trying to take Russia. And yes, i still think the very difficult logistics of trying to get through and into the Alps and Switz., has much merit. Don't think that wasn't considered.

But we're starting to get a bit off the main point here.

Pre 1971, before D.B. Cooper did his thing, it was common here in the US for anyone to carry loaded firearms on their person on airplanes. No big deal. Very rare for hijacking back then. Now suppose there still were real men on planes today carrying concealed... 9/11 would not have happened. It would STILL solve the problem today. As pointed out earlier, in Israel it sure has worked. Their pilots AND teachers carry. Their hijackings are practically non existent, as are school shootings.

It'd be nice in a utopian or idealistic society if firearms weren't necessary, but i'm a realist/pragmaticist...we have evil in the world...

Final word... a man with a firearm is a citizen.
a man without a firearm is a subject.

And THAT'S the bottom line.

Surely planes are the one place guns are not suited to?

Especially factory bought ammunition being fired by public and terrorists alike, its not as though either side are going to being thinking 'I'll pack some lightly loaded 9mm rounds because that makes a gunfight on a plane slightly less dangerous'

The idea that peace is assured if everyone is carrying a gun seems a bit unrealistic, there will always be people who choose not to own a gun. When these people end up getting killed, is it their fault for not looking after themselves?

I suppose arguing gun control issues about the US is somewhat irrelevant with 200 million guns within the country and not the most comprehensive knowledge as to who owns what.

A friend of my grandparents died in a plane crash that was the result of a suicidal guy with a gun. Not allowing the public to carry firearms on planes is a very good idea.

El-Al also has an extremely rigorous screening process, so a hijacker is unlikely to get on the plane in the first place -- makes our post-9-11 security look like a joke:

Maybe so; so, broadly speaking, america is pro-gun-control, in such a way that it prevents every schmo in the big city carrying one, but that allows you to have one for sporting or farming purposes? Seems to make sense really. I don't think anyone is in favour of people carrying automatic weapons or whatever, there's surely no non-criminal reason for that?
