Way too weak? 10/20 NL

Postby droqqa » Tue Aug 09, 2005 4:02 pm

Oppenent in this hand is a solid player. With his preflop raise, I put him on a big hand. When raising, I haven't seen him get cheeky with suited connectors. I was trying to set him up, but the flop did not cooperate. Further, his bet on the flop seems strong. Is this fold too weak?

tough spot

Tough spot.

Folding is fine.

I think leading out will get you in trouble, as JJ and AK will probably both raise you here (assuming the opponent is fairly aggressive) and youll have no idea where you are.

Check-raising is bad also, because what do you do on the turn if he calls.

I probably would have:

check-called the flop.

Bet out on the turn (2/3 pot?) if it is a blank. I think even if he has AA he will be scared of your turn bet and you may get a free showdown.

I might have fired the flop but once you check I think you have to fold.

I dont think folding is horrible, but what do you do if you are villian with AA and you get check raised on that flop. You fold unless youre an idiot.

I think you can take it away from him with a check raise. It depends on how much variance you can take. AA, AK, AQ are folding to a big check raise

With that flop? They would be crazy to call a large check raise with AA there.

I would have folded the flop as well, it's just too dangerous.

But I'm curious about your pre-flop play. I will limp frequently with AA and KK from UTG on an aggressive table, but it is generally to let a player raise and hopefully get a caller or two. Then I can put in a big re-raise and usually win the pot right there. I get to pick up a decent pot with minimal risk, but if I get a caller I like my hand as well.

But what I don't want to do is just smooth call a raise and end up having to play a big pair out of position in a raised pot. I would prefer to be the raiser if I was going to do that.

What is your thinking with this hand, and do you flat call raises much with a big pair that you limped with in EP? Is this just because it was only one other player, and you felt you could overcome the positional disadvantage? Or did you actually put him on AA and didn't want to re-raise preflop?

why didn't you reraise preflop? you can't be certain he has AA or AK, the reraise will rep aces for you and gives you the first action on the flop, if he can't beat aces.
