Never fold a set in a raised pot? 10/20NL

Postby Mad Genius » Sat Aug 06, 2005 7:17 pm

BB is fairly aggressive, I can't tell if he's good or not but I get the impression that he is a big winner. He is 'Grandiose' some of you may be familiar with him.

PokerStars No-Limit Hold'em, $20 BB (7 handed)

UTG ($1910)
MP1 ($1691)
MP2 ($5063.55)
Hero ($2047)
Button ($1925)
SB ($2307)
BB ($2134.50)

Preflop: Hero is CO with [Td], [Tc].
UTG calls $20, 2 folds, Hero raises to $80, 2 folds, BB calls $60, UTG calls $60.

Flop: ($250) [Qc], [As], [Th] (3 players)
BB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets $160, BB raises to $600, UTG folds, Hero calls $440.

Turn: ($1450) [4c] (2 players)
BB bets $1454.5 (All-In), Hero ????????

Moving in on the flop is also an option. Folding the flop IMO is not. Discuss.

Ive never played him, but Ive read enough of his posts to know that he could have a large variety of hands here including any pair and draw.

I call. Hes trying to push you off your hand on this scary flop. If its set over set, so be it. I doubt he has KJ and you have outs if he does.

He cleaned me out like 2 years ago. When I played with him...he would always seem to have the nuts when he bet. That was back when he was playing 2/4.

Feels like his all-in on the turn is a bet that doesn't want to be called. The [4c] couldn't have helped.

Without a read, is he the kind of guy that calls a pfr with KJ? Seems unlikely.

Say he had AA/QQ/AQ or any other strong flopped hand, wouldn't he bet less knowing that with your pfr you are probably on a big pair too (i..e not drawing) ?

I call.

Well, if I divide all the numbers being mentioned by about 50, then I'm calling too.

I figure AQ AT QT, AA QQ KJ pretty much exhaust his possible hands. Outside chance of KK but very doubtful. Is J9 possible for the big semibluff?

Anyway, I bet you'll win half the time so the dead money in the pot says call.

But if the guy is supposed to be really good, then isn't he a lot less likely to play AQ AT and QT to a raise? Or is he more LAG than TAG?

I called. He had AQ. The river was no help and I scooped.

For those of you who don't think he'd call a raise with KJ...I think you are very mistaken. It doesn't mean much when I raise it up preflop, although the fact that there was a limper makes it more likely that I have a hand. Still, I would find it perfectly reasonable for him to defend his blind with KJs in a short-handed game such as this.

Great win.

Interesting comment on blind defense and how KJ is possible.

Goes to show you how levels are different. At $100NL, it's not worth it to call X4 bb pfr to defend your blind. Perhaps different at your level.

He mightve had KJ, but I was pretty sure you had him beat. With KJ, your getting 2:1 on your money and only a 3.7:1 dog...With all the other 2 pair and pair and draw hands he could have, you had to call.

I think he would be more likely to reraise you with KJ though, than defend with it.
